IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
Is there an iron that doesn't have an auto shut off? It drives me nutty when I sew and get up to press and the stupid iron is OFF! and I have to wait for it reach temperature again.
This happens all the time. Sew and wait, press then sew and wait some more....arrrrgh.
Do they sell an iron without this? There are no kids in my house except my DH of course ....so I don't need the safety stuff. Just a hot iron when I turn it on. I want it to stay on until I shut it off.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I think they all do....and I hate it also.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I have a Reliable iron and you can have it be set on safety turn off or you can over ride it and the iron will stay hot and on...forever! It is so nice when you are quilting!

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I had a Rowenta that cost plenty, it would shut off and you had to unplug and replug it in to get it to start again. That thing hit the trash can and I bought a cheapie Sunbeam from K-Mart. This has auto shut off, but it only takes a short while to heat up, and doesn't turn off that quickly. So it isn't quite as frustrating! I hate that feature also.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
to get one of these you have to buy the cheap ones..... Dollar General, family Dollar, places like that.... I got one from Dollar General less than 10 bucks and heats up in about 2 minutes to HOT. and doesn't shut off.....

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I agree with you - I REALlY don't like the auto shut off!!! When I'm working away, sewing and ironing and sewing and ironing, I move the iron closer to me and every few minutes I move it so it thinks that I am using it. That saves me from waiting for it to heat up after it has gone off.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
Oh yeah, I'm hearin' ya. I hate that my iron shuts off between 'presses'.
I'm all for safety but I don't have little ones in my house very often and certainly don't use my iron when they are.
LOL @Christine - I have been known to do just that. I do the same with the mouse when I am at the computer reading something lengthy so the darn thing doesn't go to sleep on me. (Should just change my sleep settings)
I may have to investigate a cheap iron just for quilting.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I also don't care for the auto shut-off feature....a real nuisance. There should be an override button to disable it. I love my iron (Rowenta) but it shuts off way too quickly for me. :)

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I've trained myself to do the "fake it" trick every time I think it's getting ready to shut off! I pick up the iron and rock it forward once on my pressing surface as if pressing, place it upright again and continue sewing. The iron stays heated. I'm a very impatient individual and waiting for it to reheat does not work for me. I do like the fact that I can walk out of the room and leave the iron on since I know it'll shut itself off. I certainly shut it off when I'm done but there are plenty of times when I have to jump up from my sewing to throw in some laundry, get the mail, turn off a pot on the stove, etc. If you can get in the habit of "faking it" (we're talkin' irons, not the bedroom please) you will be a happy and SAFE sewer. Sandy, if you're reading my reply that one is for you! Hahaha!

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I guess for once I'm lucky to have something really old! I have an old B&D and I just plug it in for my entire sewing session...just in case I need to press. Maybe check garage sales, elderly relatives, or Goodwill for an old, cheap iron before auto-shut-off technology & safety regulations!

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
When I went to a retreat I didn't want to take my full size iron so I took a little Black and Decker travel iron that we had in the closet -- it can be dry or steam. It gets hotter than my regular iron, has a much longer cord, and no auto shut off. I use it regularly for pressing when I'm sewing -- if I'm going to iron larger pieces of fabric I use my regular iron, but for pressing as I'm sewing quilt blocks I always use the travel iron.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
In this case, cheaper is better because the cheap irons don't all have auto-shutoff.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I have an old Black & Decker with a long cord and stainless sole plate and I have a newer, sleeker, teflon, auto shut off, short cord, stick to fabric iron. I use the Black & Decker even if it is uglier than the new iron, I don't like the auto shut-off because I want that iron ready to go when I'm ready to use it.

Usually the travel irons don't have a shut off feature. They're also nice to take to classes or retreats.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I have one of those little $10 (around that) irons from MSQC http://www.missouriquiltco.com/mini-...s-toolbox.html
and it is great to keep on a small board right next to your sewing machine. Maybe that's my problem. I don't pay enough for irons?????? I also have an older Black and Decker that stays on and keep it 'lit' when sewing for those larger pieces.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
My iron is about 30 years old so it doesn't have that feature! I have been thinking of getting a new one, but now...I'll stick with my old tried and true one! I didn't know the new ones came with this. How annoying. IT is just something that further makes people not use their brains and common sense, which unfortunately is the wave of the future I guess....another item that "does it for you so you dont' have to remember to do it yourself" gadget. No wonder people don't know how to think anymore!

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I have an old Black & Decker that cost under $10 that I use for quilting...family keeps buying me new and "improved" irons...they sit in the linen closet! :D
You would think iron manufacturers would pay attention to us quilters! :D

When I purchased my new iron a couple months ago I thought this was a great feature...NOT!!! Its a pain in my "you know where"!

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
My 3 year old son recently turned my iron on and put it onto my ironing board then walking away. It did scold my ironing board but I am thankful for the auto shutoff. But, it does drive me nuts. I do the fake ironing every so often so that it doesn't shut off./

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
Rowenta had an iron without auto- shut off a couple of years ago, was more expensive, but I guess it is worth it....if you like Rowenta. My mini-iron just quit heating last weekend, so I am looking for another one. I do wish they would listen to us.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
Well, I'm glad I'm old and have old irons. None of my three shut off!! Hope that they last longer than me. I would hate that kind of feature as I'm rather impatient. I wouldn't have the time to wait for it to heat up again.

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
Looks like I will be getting that Hamilton Beach one that Shirley pointed me to. Thanks tons...
Coffee, I hear you on that too. I will be looking for a different suv in the fall and now they pictures in them to use the 4-wheel drive? and parking assist? OMG...doesn't anyone pass their road test for their license anymore? I had to show a young 30 something guy how to change is own tire because he forgot to pay for his AAA. What is this world coming to? I am feeling like I am part of a dying breed.......:(

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
I fake it in the dining room (with my iron, of course! :P), but with me also being impatient, I get so irritated when I've been sewing away, then jump up for a quick press of the ole seams, and the dang iron is cold! Grrr! I agree, irons with a choice of auto shut off or not would be wonderful. Dollar General is on my list tomorrow, going to see about a cheapie iron there. Thanks for the tip girls!

Re: IRONS WITH AUTO SHUT OFF ......MAKE ME CRAZY!
Rowenta makes a crafting iron that doesn't shut off. We are close to QVC. The "Queen of Steam" who is a representative for Rowena iron gave one to my daughter because she was having the same problem. When Barbara came into the salon to get her nails done my daughter asked her if they had an iron that didn't shut off so she gave her one. But I think you can buy them at Joann Fabrics.
