Help with Dresden plate pattern
Hello to all my quilty friends. I need your help. I have done all the plates I need. What I need to know is how to attach them to my background fabric. Do I hand stitch them, machine zig zag. I don't know what to do.
I am going to say Thank you right now for all of your advice.
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I hand stitched mine down and then machine quilted around each blade. I have one in my albums..good luck
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
Hi Monique..... I hand stitched all of mine. I like the blind stitch ....
I'm sure yours will be gorgeous. Please share a photo when you finish
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I hand stitched mine as well. I know some people machine stitch with a blanket stitch or zigzag.
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I haven't made one yet, but have a couple planned and will handstitch them. Have you watched Jenny's videos for the Dresden Plate and Turkeys? It is one of my faves to watch and will help you out alot on the stitching.
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I have done it both ways. It would probably depend on how big it is - full size quilt, or a wall hanger? Will you hand quilt it or machine quilt it? Will you do the quilting or have it done by someone else? I appliqued the plate to the foundation piece when I did the mini Dresden plate and the quilter just went around the center ring, then stippled the background. My big 15 inch blocks, I sewed the plates down with invisible thread, but the quilter went over it. I'm just doing a Dresden Welcome wallhanger, that I need to finish quilting. I tacked down the plate with invisible thread but put another layer of batting behind it so it puffs out. Another question, is did you remove (trim) the layer of fabric behind the plates? Is your Dresden made from flower petals or blades? I know I'm asking lots of questions - need to post more pictures in my albums. I enjoy working on them. Take care.
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
Hi Lola . I always wanted to make a plate but never could till I watched Jeeny & her tutorial. Now I have down 3 blocks of plates. I love her teachings and so easy to learn from. I also hand stitched mine as well . Wished I knew how to post I would post them Oh well Lol. God bless
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I'm in the process of making a Dresden quilt and I hand stitched my plates and centers to the block. I found I could do one or two per evening and I enjoyed doing them while watching TV. Barb
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
Thanks for the good advice. I guess hand stitching it is. This will be a big quilt 105x105. And it will be hand quilted. I will try and take pics of what I have so far.
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I am working on a Cal-K sized quilt and I never even thought about hand-stitching these down!??? I was planning on machine stitching with a blanket stitch. Now I have to re-think it?
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I have been thinking of doing a Dresden plate baby quilt. But with my arthritis I am sure I will be doing some sort of machine stitching. I would definitely machine stitch if it was a large quilt.
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I hand appliqued....and am now hand appliqueing the center circles...I have 6 left...then I will post! It's only 6 years in the making!!!
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
OK I'll be the lone decenter. I made a lap size and I put the pate on a 14 1/2 size backround piece. Folded the backround piece inhalf twice, to find the center. Then I pinned the plate to the backround. Put the center on and pinned it. Then I did the blanket stich by machine around the plate and then the center. If I felt any shifting--then a dab of fabric glue helped. But I didn"t need to glue. When I get the top together I'll machine stitch around the plate--moving 1/4 inch away and then between the plate sections. then on the inside of the center by 1/4th inch. This will keep the sandwich from shifting. Hope this helps and I'll post a picture when I'm done. Pam
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
Not the only one, I have plans for a dresden sunflower wall hanging and I will be machine stitching it. I may or may not glue baste it. I did a big flower applique on a baby quilt yesterday and did glue baste it then did a satin stitch around and it worked great. If it continues to look cute to me I may enter it into our guild's show this Summer.
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I always handstitch mine. I'm so afraid I'll mess it up trying the do it by machine.
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
That is what I am worried about Rebecca. Thanks for your input!
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I made one for my husband's grandmother a few years ago..I used a light fusible webbing to place them then I used a blanket stitch to sew them on...worked great..
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I really don't mind the handwork! It looks so much nicer to me. I just decide to do one every evening while watching something good on the tube. Before I know it, I've got beautiful blocks ready to turn into a quilt! We're such a hurry-up society today. Some things just shouldn't be rushed. That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it!

Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I did both of my dresdens on my machine. The yellow one as you can see I stitched inside each petal and the green one I did a blanket stitch around the outside of the flower petals and did a SID down each petal to secure it to the background and then I did a satin stitch around the center of the flower.

Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
I wish I could do hand quilting but carpal's tunnel says otherwise...
Re: Help with Dresden plate pattern
