    Default Comforters or Bedspreads....

When charts tell you the size of a quilt as being, twin, queen or king size.....does that mean twin, queen or king COMFORTER or BEDSPREAD? And I am going by the comforter as being about half way down the sides of the bed with a dust ruffle on the box springs that goes to the floor and a bedspread as being from the floor up over the bed and down to the floor on the other side and also from the top of the bed down the bed and over the bottom to the floor.

I decided to design and make bedspreads for the two twin beds I am putting in my extra bedroom (decorating it with a garden effect) and I hate comforters and dust ruffles. I can't stand the corners of the comforter sticking out/pointed out. And I've yet to see a dust ruffle that didn't look like an oversized ruffle that was forgotten to be sewed to the comforter!!! I just don't like them. So I want to do bedspreads...floor to floor all the way around. I know I could measure and do the math, but was hoping to be able to cheat just a little (isn't cheating legal in quilting?) and just add on each side if the "twin" size stated is comforter size and if it is bedspread measurements...no math at all! Quilting can be easy!!!!!!

Anyway...just keeping my spirits up as I can tell this is going to be a mamouth undertaking...and a long time in the works..and to make two identical ones? I need all the "cheats" I can get!

So...is the chart for comforters or bedspreads? Thanks in advance!!!

it depends on what chart you are looking at. Bookmark this one. It gives measurements for all of them.

To be safe, measure the bed from the floor, over the top of the mattress and to the floor on the other side. Do the same from the headboard to the floor at the foot of the bed. Find a quilt size that comes close to those measurements. Remember, borders can be very large to make up the difference. Most quilts, I believe, are in measurements to only cover the mattress or even down to cover the bed rails, but I don't think they are in measurements to reach the floor. I've always been taught that a bedspread reaches the floor. Thus the difference between a quilt and a bedspread. I have a beautiful log cabin quilt that was a wedding present from the students in Joe's graduate class. It was made in Lancaster, Pennsylvania by some very talented Amish women. The log cabin blocks hang over the mattress but there is a very wide border so it reaches past the side rails. The quilters hand-quilted the borders in straight, vertical rows. It's lovely. A wonderful way to make a quilt larger without all that additional piecing. If I had to guess, I would imagine a full-size quilt with wide borders would probably be just about right for floor-to-floor on a twin.

Let us know what you come up with. I'm curious.

The only way to get your bedspread to fit really well is to measure. There really are no standard measurements anymore because mattress and box springs (foundations) come in different thicknesses. The same is true for bed frames - some are taller than others. Take the time to measure so you will be happy with the outcome. Don't forget that during the quilting process your quilt will shrink an inch or so.

You also need to make the bottom corners into a rounded shape to not have long points sticking out on the floor into the room. At the bottom corners you measure up the drop of the bed from the side and from the bottom and mark the point and use it as your diameter for a half circle.
When you measure the bed you should do it with any sheets and blankets on it as they can make a difference in the drop length.
Dust ruffles can be very tailored with pleats all around or just corner and center pleats.

Thanks Claire...about the curved corners. Didn't think about that and that is one of the things I don't like about comforters..that corner sticking out! Thanks for mentioning this. I wouldn't have thought about it! Now I just have to find a pattern!

It is always safer to measure your bed. Not all beds are the same, depending on the type of frame it is on and the type of mattress. Mattresses with the pillow tops are going to measure more than those without. I have a HUGE king size log bed in storage and the bed frame itself from post to post is 8 feet square and pretty high up from the floor. I would never untake a project of a quilt to go from floor to floor on that thing. LOL....

    Good luck.
