    Default I'm perplexed

    Hi everyone...

The blue and yellow "Twisting the Night Away" quilt is off to the long arm quilters and I'm ready for a new project. But, I'm either having a senior moment or I'm just dumb ... not sure which.

I have a charm pack and two jelly rolls in the Lilac Hill design. My "not so brilliant" idea was to alternate blocks.... one being a charm pack square bordered on all four sides with a jelly roll strip. So far so good but that's where the so good ends. The finished block measures about 9 inches square. The second block I had in mind, and obviously I didn't think it through ...was a 9 patch or a 16 patch made from the jelly strips. Well, well.... those don't measure out to nine inches. So, I've been looking for blocks where I can use the jelly roll strips to make a 9 inch block... without having to cut the pretty fabric into tiny pieces. I considered a log cabin.... but haven't found a 9" log cabin block.

Perhaps I'm just making this harder than it has to be... but I'm stumped. If you have any ideas... please share them?
    Thank you all so much.

This is a link to the Lilac Hill line, but since I have 2 jellies, I'm going to pull out the reds and use them for another project.

With jelly roll strips you will never get 9" just piecing them together, you'll either get 8 or 10. There is going to have to be some kind of cutting to get the odd inch.

How about Three jelly roll strips with a solid neutral stripe between them, narrower than a jelly roll, cut them 2" wide and 3 jelly strips end up 2" each=6" and 2 neutrals end up 1-1/2" each=3"3 + 6 =9". I just saw a quilt using white between 3 jelly rolls, it looked good. If I can find it again, I'll send you the link. I see your pattern has a tan/beige background, you could use that for your neutral.

The website is www.quiltingintherain.com. And the pattern is Twirl quilt kit"Simple Cakes"

Oh I like that pattern a lot for your fabric, I think this is a great idea.
It's a beautiful line of fabric, so whatever you're making it will be pretty!!

    Have fun!

Or you could cut the charm squares to make rectangles instead of squares. That would be pretty easy to do. I'm thinking this through with you, because I was planning on using the same materials to make a black and white quilt with red accents.

From what I can see, your bordered blocks should be measuring 9" and a 16-patch would measure 8.5". Can't you just cut a 1/4" off each side of the borders on the the 9" block? That way all blocks will measure 8.5".
