5" Half Hexi / Jelly Roll - width of rows?
Has anybody here finished a quilt using Natalie's 5" half Hexi ruler and a jelly roll? What size did it end up?
I'm about to start one with the "Chemistry" jelly roll and would appreciate some advice on layout - how many hexis wide and how many rows?
Thanks!!
Re: 5" Half Hexi / Jelly Roll - width of rows?
I love "chemistry"! What pattern are you using? I've been wanting to do a quilt using the half hexi. I saw one or two that I liked but didn't bookmark them. Good luck, sorry i can't really answer your question. I estimate the size by multiplying the square inches you can possibly get from a jelly roll, the strips would be 2" wide by about 40" long times 40 strips. 2x40x40=3200. So the quilt could be 80"x40". Or 60" x50" with a bit to spare, just a rough estimate.

I have done one with 3 charm packs. It ended up about cot sized

That's the trouble - I don't have a pattern, but I love the "Chemistry" fabric :-) I'm just going to have a go based on Jenny's video tutorial. I think from one jelly roll strip I should be able to cut 4 hexagons (8 half-hexagons) and there are 40 strips in the jelly roll, which makes 160 hexagons. So I'm thinking of 11 hexagons long x 14 hexagons wide = 154 hexagons.
Would love to see how anybody else has tackled the half hexi jelly roll :-)

Mine ended up being 14.5 long x 9 wide. You have to lay it all out before you sew it together so that you can match the halves up in each row, so you will get an idea of how big it will end up. I added my border pieces as half hexagons on each row so that I could keep the full hexagon shape of my charm pack pieces. Remember that the hexagon rows overlap a little so it won't come out as wide as you would think.
Re: 5" Half Hexi / Jelly Roll - width of rows?
I am working on a king sized hexagon quilt for myself using 4 jelly rolls. I am using the creative grids ruler that is demonstrated here:

Now that's a cool ruler! I hope we get to see your quilt, it sounds like it will be lovely! I want to make a quilt using hexagons, this ruler looks easier to use than the small half-hex ruler. It would be a lot less cutting, that's for sure!
How's our new mama doing? Thinking of you, that's for sure!

I promise I will show it off! I'm about halfway through making my hexagons now. It's not something I get to work on every day though, as I have to sell items to make my quilting money, so I aways seem to have a lot of other more important things to sew.
I'm doing fine, pregnancy seems to agree with me. Just tired, but this time I'm not working 60 hour weeks so I should be able to just cruise through.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Here's my planned quilt layout using the half Hexi ruler and the Chemistry fabric.
I like to use PowerPoint as a 'virtual design wall' for my quilts.

Wow did you come up with the power point method of quilt designing? It is just awesome! I'm an afficianato of PP myself, I am going to try this. Very cool!

Yes, I came up with it myself. I do a lot of graphic design type work, so I'm more at home with laying stuff out on-screen than 'in real life' (!). PowerPoint's crop- to-shape function is ideally suited to making block shapes out of fabric photos.
Re: 5" Half Hexi / Jelly Roll - width of rows?
I use graph paper..well, not even that. I have a spiral notebook and make the "graph" squars myself and use markers! Works well for me. I really don't want to spend the time to learn the Power Point way. I also like to be able to take it with me if I want to do it on commercials while watching a show or at the kitchen table...I don't like sitting in front of the computer all the time! I tend to not be able to think much that way..... but in my hands...I can't stop thinking. Look forward to seeing your finished product. I just got the half hexi ruler...and started a strip with it, but dont' like it! For some reason, mine doesn't look as nice as the one on Jenny's tut!

I just looked at the chemistry jelly roll...that'd be a good one for Valentines day or Christmas...or add some blue for Patriotic theme.
