Has anyone done string blocks?

The scraps in my sewing room are shivering in fright, no more softly nestled in a bin never to be disturbed, I had forgotten all about these squares and I have made one before for my daughter a long time ago, over 20 years she still has it. Thanks for the reminder.

If you are signed up for Craftsy (free to join) there is a Free BOM class that you can join. The two block patterns for March are string blocks, she shows you how to make them and they are both very nice!
Can't wait to see the April blocks.

I went to the quilt show in Pigeon Forge last weekend and there was a vendor there that had a template you use to make quilt as you go string blocks (I'm a sucker, so I got it, but haven't had time to try it yet). It's a square in a square. You cut the backing material to fit the large block, cut the batting to match the small block and sew the string part on top (this is the quilting), then you trim the top string block to match the batting and use the larger backing to make binding or attach to another block. I thought it was neat and can't wait to give it a try!
