Jackpot....

Went down to my Dad's today and got the opportunity to go through my mothers craft room thoroughly. I was looking for a dresden plate template. I ran across a fruit cake tin full of the attached picture quilt block pieces. My dad was unsure of the name of the block or how they are used. I think it might be a dresden plate or Grandmother's Fan.... I was wanting to know for sure. Can someone please help. They look like they are all shirts that have been cut up and you can still see the ink form the ball point pen that was used. I was told by my dad that my mom an aunt and my grandmother all worked on these and made about 6 quilts. My mom has been gone for 12 yrs and aunt longer than that and grandmother for 10. I think these have more value to me because of that than for any other reason.

Kellie....The blades could have been used for either a Dresden Plate or a Grandmother's Fan quilt. Looking at the prints, I think they would make a nice Dresden Plate quilt. Do you have more of the blades? If not you could surely find fabrics to coordinate with the pieces you have. It would make a lovely memory quilt for you. Hugs, Barb

Each one of those stacks is about an inch thick... I think i may have enough for a quilt... or i could just make what i have and see how much i end up with.... but any input is needed

My first thought is dresden plate, but as Barb mentioned it could be grandmother's fan. That should make an awesome quilt!

UPDATE: attached is a pic of how i put one "block" together... I used 20 blades and it made about a 12 in. block ... I still need to figure out the center as far as size and how i want to attache the two... weather to applique on top or sew the center to each of the blades.... I've seen them both ways.

I just love this! Having something from your mother's sewing is wonderful. I have my mother's thimbles that she used daily and I will forever keep them close to my heart.

How fun! I have some blocks my mom never put together. Your mom would be so happy to see you putting together her blocks and making a quilt. In case you're unfamiliar with this technique, once you've got all the plates made you can sew lightweight fusible interfacing to them. Don't sew on the circle until after you do the following:

Cut squares a bit larger than the plates - lay smooth side of the interfacing (rough side is the glue) on top of the right side of the fabrics - sew around the edge a scant 1/4 " - trim off excess interfacing - clip up to the stitching at the corner of each blade - turn them right side out - iron in place onto the background fabric squares. It'll save you from having to turn under all those blades.

Thank you soooooo much Rebecca.... I was wondering how best to do that.... I just knew everyone from here would know how to use these and work with them. The only thing is i will have to wait to do it cause other projects are in line first.... unfortunately other projects have deadlines....
