Question White picket fence on a quilt idea....

    http://greenfairyquilts.blogspot.co....ree-charm.html

Look at this site and the quilt a few pictures down..a white picket fence. I am wanting to try this but in reading her captions....she says she stippled it white on white for "wood grain"...and then said she wasn't sure she liked it when ti was done.
While trying to create a similar picket fence for a quilt I am planning to do made me think....the stippling would be a great effect for the wood grain to set it off as a fence and I think it looks good had she not mentioned this issue! So it made me start wondering...what if I use a brown thread for the stippling to make it look like wood grain? I can see how white or white might be to much, however....the brown on white.... I think I can image it looking odd too...like maybe just over-play or standing out to much to give the wood grain effect or something like that.

What do you all think? White on white or brown (light brown) on white for wood grain effect?

Maybe a beige or taupe colored thread on the white. It would not be too sharp a contrast but still give you the wood grain look you want to achieve.

I agree with Cathy...maybe a beige or taupe...something a with color but not too dark.

Cheri, I read her comments about not liking the white on white, but I thought it was great. If you have a white picket fence (a real one) and it is white-washed (see Tom Sawyer), then you would still be able to see the wood grain and it would be the same color as the white-wash . . .
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

What about light gray on the white along with beige or taupe? When painted wood gets crackled, the lines sometimes look gray from the weathered wood underneath.

I thought it looked great to. If she hadn't said anything I would be asking this! I figure as good as she is which is so much better than me...maybe I should listen! But I do see her point too. White on white is fine...I was just thinking and sometimes that gets me into trouble! I will be making mine with longer slats - from the floor/bottom of the quilt to the top edge of the bed....so I guess my concern is that it will be to much white, being that long. I am trying for a "picket fence" around each bed...so to speak! And in that case...it might be to much white. Maybe just a taupe color and not brown...

That could work. I am making the slat on mine taller so it would be more white that on hers. This is what I am trying to accomodate.

I wouldn't go too dark. As suggested a very light grey or even an ecru or cream would be nice. Otherwise it will take away from the picket fencing itself.

Since you've gotten such great suggestions on quilting the fence, I just want to say, boy that woman can quilt!

Yeah, I think a light light brown will work ..is that ecru? I want it to look white, but still have some definition to it. Or maybe just a cream/off white. Thanks!
