Default Let's chat about curved seams/piecing......

I am planning a music-themed quilt for my grandson's high school graduation. Thinking that curved seams (wof) or curved piecing in blocks would give it a more rhythmic "flow" than straight lines. Who has experience with this method and what are your tips and techniques? THX!

Actually, there are some really pretty quilts that look like they have curves but are actually straight lines. It's an optical illusion. I wish I could direct you to one of Fons and Porter's videos but alas they are now charging to watch them. It'll be interesting to see what other patterns our friends suggest. In the meantime I'm off to look around a bit and see what's out there.

Actually, one that I've always liked but haven't made - YET - is the kaleidoscope quilt! This one looks super easy especially since it's paper-pieced! http://www.quilterscache.com/K/KaleidoscopeBlock.html
If you don't like paper-piecing I'm sure it can be done with templates.

I saw a quilt when I was out shop hopping with my sister the other day that would be perfect. It was applique. HOWEVER it was huge pieces done on a light background and from a distance it looked as if it had been bordered with a bias. It was really funky material and while I don't feel real funky, I think I'm going to try something like it. I can see it done with black background and black and white fabrics with maybe a hint of musical theme in it. Let your imagination run wild.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Wow, your concept is so good! I can see staffs and other curved images jumping through my brain. But I have no idea how to do it.

I myself steer clear of curves as of right now. I'm having enough problems with straight! But good luck to you and I'm sure your daughter will love anything you make regardless of straight or curved. I'm with Rebecca in the idea that straight lines can look curved if you place them strategically. I made a tessalated cat design with 4 cats with their curved tails intertwined, it looks curved, but it was all made from squares, rectangles and triangles. Look on my blog for the picture of the cats http://www.soooowht.blogspot.com/

My DD made a "Winding Ways"quilt. I'm not much for sewing that many curves but she did a great job on it. This is the book she used:

That is so cool!!! I assume we can use our "Easy Circle Cut" ruler by Sharon Hultgren. It's marked with circles that increase in size by 1". It looks super easy to do this technique. Thanks for posting, Sunny!
