Default How do you sew 2.5 strips and they square up when you cut them into squares.

    Hello Everyone,

I have looked at the tutorials on MSQC for a while and they are so very informative. Right now I am in a frustration mode. I cut four strips of material 2.5 inch wide. I sew them together with a quarter inch foot. I pressed the seams to one side and was very pleased how it looked. When I got ready to cut squares, the four strips were off. What did I do wrong. Can someone help me please.

Hi Ann, I thought I just replied to this msg. What do you mean by off?
Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.

you lose 1/2 an inch when you make the seam so cut your square at 4.5 inches. (for 2 strips)

for 4 strips sewn together it would be 8.50 inches

You need to make sure that you alternate the direction that you sew the strips and be careful not to pull/stretch the pieces as you sew them. I just sewed some jellyroll strips last week and they turned out pretty good...not perfect, but doable. I have an Omni-grid square ruler that I used. It helped to square my blocks so that the strips ran straight within the block. Hope this helps.

If you sewed 4 strips that were 2.5", you strips set should be 8.5" or thereabouts. I say thereabouts because depending your your 1/4" foot and your experience you could be off by a hair or 2 either way. As Bellaquilts asked, what do you mean by off? Are you over or under 8.5", and by how much? If you're within 1/8" (8 3/8" or 8 5/8"), that's not totally unheard off and is usable. Give us more details if you can.
