Re: Broadcloth
I have bought yards and yards of the Symphony Broadcloth from Jo-anns when it was on sale for $1.99 a yard. The store is a ways from me and so when the ad showed the sale, I'd go up and buy $50 worth of all colors...with quilting and little girls dresses in mind. It works wel for the dressess...but...borderline for quilts.
It is 50/50 Polyester and cotton...polyester stretches and once washed, the fabric is thin and doesn't hold shape as well. Like I said...find for dresses, but I have found that it is not so good for quilts. If I use it in a small area in a long strip no longer than about 18 inches...it is okay, just be careful as I work with it so I don't stretch it any. But any larger areas of it..and it doesn't work so well. I just finished a quilt with long strips of it...you can tell where it started stretching. So I am 100% cotton all the way now. I just ordered some from Threads.com as it was on sale (normally 100 cotton is like $8-$10 a yard...and I can't afford that but they had it on sale for $2.48...however..i just got it and washed it, and it seems little thin and stretchy. But I think the stretchy is just cause it is a weave and that will stretch no matter what unless the fabric is a thicker style /weave like denim.
However...I have found that the cotton poly is good for bindings. I don't like doing the bias cut...to much work and trouble it seemas. So I always have done the straight cut and then sewed the strips together and then folded in half, pressed, and then sewed the one side to the front of the quilt, and then folded it over to the back and SITD or other decorative stitch to sew it down and it works really well. I think because of the mild stretch it is just enough stretch for it to bend and do a binding right. It has worked really well for that on the last 3 quilts I have done.
