Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
I have a hand-look quilt stitch on my machine and I LOVE the way it looks! I just wondered where and how I would use this stitch (for you hand-quilters). Do I use it to actually quilt a quilt or only as a decoration in places or along seams or around applique, etc. If you could explain its application that would be great! I can't wait to try it in a project. Thank you. (and please ignore my nasty practice sandwich meanders!)

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
Angie, you're soo lucky to have this stitch! I'm no longer a hand stitcher, but if I had this stitch I would, at the very least, use it on long straight lines. I'm soo envious! :)

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
I bookmarked this quilt a couple weeks ago because I liked how she had the hand stitching in the sashings. Your machine stitch would work perfectly.

Also, there are some examples here

That is a really cool machine stitch. Still wondering how the machine does it.

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
wish my machine had a stitch like that, I love the way handstitching looks, but don't do much handquilting any more...I'm all about getting large blocks of a quilt done in one sitting...can't do that with handquilting.
just use it to quilt along side the seams...

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
I will have to try that out. My machine has one but I have never used it. Did you use a walking foot? Is that varigated thread in your bobbin or the top thread?

Claire, I just used the F foot recommended by the manual. I don't know if it would work with a wf...I will try and let you know. The variegated thread is the top thread (I just threw it on there because my sandwich is white).

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
This is the same stitch my BabyLock Sashiko machine makes. I can adjust the length of the stitch and the space between stitches...it's awesome, but it was really expensive for making only one stitch! :)

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
Snipping the thread in between will be a bit time consuming but probably FAR quicker than hand-stitching a whole quilt!

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
That is so pretty and I love your thread. I really like the look of the stitch and since I'm looking at quilting machines maybe I'll see what I can find with that stitch.

I have that stitch too, I did a small practice piece, did the snipping of jump thread...said no way to a lap quilt. LOL

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
Wow! that's neat! I sure couldn't hand-stitch as pretty as your machine does. I'm curious how it makes that stitch.

It's my Janome Horizon 7700. It does work with the AccuFeed system (like the walking foot).
**ANOTHER QUESTION:** Would I have to snip the jump threads on the back too? Also, how long a stitch do hand quilters make and how far apart (equal to the stitch length or shorter?).

Yes, for it to look right the jump stitches should be cut on the back as well. Hand quilting differs. Regular hand quilting usually ranges from 10 to 15 stitches per inch. The stitching on the example I showed earlier are larger stitches, more decorative, I'm guessing maybe 6 to 8 per inch. The quilting done with pearl cotton is the longer stitch length.

Wow, Girl. That is so neat to have the option. It could work on some primitive embroidery designs as well.

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
I have hand look stitches on my Janome 11000se but I've never tried them yet. I did try the FMQ last night and I'm horrible at it! Think I'm gonna give the FMQ up...

Angie-
I love the stitch....what type of machine do you have? I have a Husq. Topaz, but I don't think I have that stitch. I've been playing with the other dec stitches on the machine to use on the quilt I'm working on...but I don't think I have that one :(

Genny: DON'T GIVE UP! You can do it! By golly, if I can (never sewed before August) you can! You've got a great machine...just keep practicing on something that doesn't matter...you'll get it!

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
Genny, there is no giving up in FMQ. Seriously, it takes practice, and then you will be amazed with what you can do. I read this entire book before I even tried it: "Free-Motion Machine Quilting" by Don Linn. It really helped me get my mind right, so I could keep up the good fight until I got good enough to proceed slowly with an actual whole-cloth practice quilt. I am pretty happy with it. Don't give up.

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
My machine has that stitch and I never really paid attention to it but I did a practice piece with it yesterday and snipped the threads I like the way it looks.

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
I have a Janome 6600. How can I find the stitch if I have it? I didn't say that right, but hope you caught my drift. I love that stitch! TFS.

gigi712, here's a photo of what the diagram looks like, 3 lines together in a row, then one stitch, then 3 again...P94 in the photo! Hope that helps you - I couldn't find a 6600 stitch chart on-line to tell you exactly if you have it.

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
Angie
I was not able to see the picture(s) of the stitch but do have it on my machine. I would love to try it as I love the hand quilt look but don't know how to use it. I tried it last night after reading your post but it looked like a regular stitch. I guess i need to cut the "jump" stitch. Problem is I don't know what the "jump" stitch is. Is it the single one ore the one that looks like it has more than one thread.
Thanks

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
Angie....What does the stitch look like on the underneath side???? Barb

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
Angie, I have one that looks like that one and I have to use the 'F' foot. I'm in the middle of finishing a project right now and will try it as soon as I finish. (I hate changing feet, lol) Thank you for taking the time to let me know what to look for.
I can't see the pics now either. Bummer! I just want to drool when I see them. :)

OMG! All my photos are gone!!! Yikes - what happened?? That's a real drag. Yes, gig712, you have to use the F foot. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
mrsg730 - I'll try again! It's not letting me load photos.. And you have to cut the jump thread - the single one!

Re: Hand-look Machine Stitch & How to Apply
Angie, your photo of the stitch program above is there for me.

Thanks Angie. Hope you can re-load the pics.
