Default Marking sew lines with tape

Don't know if anyone else is doing this, but I find it to be a real time saver. Instead of marking straight lines on my quilt, I'm using the 1/4" tape I bought years ago as a hand quilting tool. Much quicker than marking the fabric, much more visible than marking, the tape isn't terribly expensive and you can reuse the pieces several times. I'm quilting a 4 patch, alternating with squares of focus fabric. I did all the SITD around the blocks, now I'm doing the diagonals.

*Note the SNTD (Stitch NEAR The Ditch) quilting. Am I wrong to let that go???

I have used that before when I was hand-quilting 1/4 inch from the seam around each block. I tended to start veering off by the time I got to the end of a side so I started using tape. Since it was short pieces, I would pull them off and use them on the next block. I've thought about using it when I machine quilted diagonals on my D9P, but I was too much of a penny pincher to use all that tape. There may be times when I will use it with machine quilting, but it's too expensive to use all the time...at least for me. Glad it's helping you save some time.

LOL...Let it go Deb, Let it go! You have our permission as there are no quilt police on this forum. And if they are lurking here! Get off!! So there!!!

    Looks great. You go girl!!

After years of doing flipping houses with my Mom and Step Dad before it was the hip thing to do (mid 70's), we were the wall paper queens and I can lay down a trim edge without a level line. I can luckily do those diamond diagonal by eye as long as the blocks aren't over six inches in length. Phew most of them aren't on the Q4Ks. My next kit is on it's way. I'm hoping for the Mayfly fabric. hehe.

Thanks, Ruby! I need to slow down a little and my SNTD will be more SITD. I'm a hurrier by nature, and quilting has knocked a lot - but not all - of that outta me .

Wish I could sew diagonals by eye! Not a chance! Nor is my stitching straight enough without some guidance. Funny, after six years I still feel very "new" to quilting, always learning!

Here's hoping you get the Mayfly Mischief! Did I tell you I'm going with Option #2 of the three you photoshopped?? Thanks for your help! I'm quilting that fence rail next.

I used regular masking tape recently and it worked great on diagonals. I was able to reuse the tape several times if I was careful before it wadded up on me. You can use the wide tape and then sew down either side to make a 2" wide spacing. I am going to try that next time. I did find that the blue tape won't stick well enough but the tan is fine and peels off well.

Claire, my BF just said that to me - that regular masking tape would probably work just as well. I haven't compared prices. Great idea using the wide tape like that!

I use that tape all the time as I do a lot of hand quilting and it keeps me on the "straight and narrow" so to speak. Very easy to use and can lift and move around, and no markings to spritz away!

I use the brown masking tape all the the time for my quilting lines. Different widths make some quilts interesting. It is great for diagonals. The blue tape does not work, it lifts up and moves on you while you are sewing. It is really great for creating interesting designs on baby quilts.
