    Default Stack and Whack

Hi there.... I am having problems with not having 1/4" allowance on my outside points generally on one side of my block. Have any of you had those problems? Thanks for any info you could pass along!

Ack!!! The dreaded 1/4" seam....I think every quilter has had that problem especially when they first start to quilt. One thing you can do is get a cutting ruller that has a 1/4" marking on it close to the edge of the ruler. Place the 1/4" mark line under your presser foot and line up you needle exactly to the line. Now take a piece of painters tape or masking tape and tape beside the edge of the ruler marking the 1/4" line on your machine. Mark it down away from your presser foot though so it doesn't interfere with your feed dogs. Now try to keep your fabric on the edge of the tape assuring you a good 1/4" seam. You can test it with a piece of scrap fabric to make sure it is lined up right.

Alana, I think Molly is talking about points being cut off because of the 3" strip width. I had to adjust the strip to 2 3/4" x 8", then when I sewed the two block together I ended up 1/4" all around for joining other blocks without losing my points.

Hope that helps. I have some blocks in my Emily and Heather album that show Stack and Whack. Make sure you use starch and no steam, it will help a lot with piecing.

Ooops! Sorry about that. Guess I should read the posts more carefully....lol! Did you use a scant 1/4"? I had this problem with my strip stars when sashing them. Haven't tried the stack and whack yet but it might be a scant......
