    Default Flannel and Cotton together?

    Hi Everyone

I've been so busy at work and home that I have not had time to quilt or come to see you guys. I am hoping to have a little time tonight and this weekend for my quilting and would like to make something for my son who keeps asking when are you going to make one for me. He really loves baseball and I have a yard of flannel baseball fabric and a couple of yards of regular cotton quilting fabric. My question is could I use them together to make a simple patchwork quilt for him? I would like to alternate the squares but am not sure if I could mix the two different fabrics.

Thanks as always for your help
    Happy Quilting

I've never mixed the squares in flannel and cotton, but I do use flannel for batting in my quilts. Guess I can't help you with this, but I'm sure one of the wonderful ladies on here can.

I mix them up all the time ...it gives a nice texture to the quilt...I make the little kids PJ bottoms and use the scraps to make them taggy blankets...I use scraps of just about everything together...once it is quilted and washed, it seems fine...I rarely ever prewash any fabrics anymore since the processing of cottons has changed greatly, but I am sure a lot of people are going to recommend that you prewash your fabrics first in case they "shrink" differently...

    ^what she said!
I LOVE to mix textures! You know nobody says you can't do something that you fancy, and if they did I would ignore them and try it anyways! What's the worst that can happen.

I think the only big no-no that I do watch out for(probably a silly thing) is that I won't mix STRONG/BRIGHT/DEEP colours and white or cream. I hate the idea of doing something and the colour running on to the pale colour so much I avoid it. That's the only thing though.

    Good luck and mix away!

I've mixed them. It's nice to do for a young child because they like the different textures. Usually though, I use flannel for the backing. It makes a quilt more cuddly to me.

Mixing is great, but flannel does shrink a lot more than cotton, so wash it and dry on perm press or high a couple of times. Then wash your cotton regularly. That should do the trick.

The quilt in my avater is flannel, cotton and t-shirt fronts. They went together great. The back is fleece. Just know that flannel doesn't "move" as easy as cotton when you are lining up your edges to sew and you need to manuvere the two to match.
