can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
Ok her is my problem. i ran out of batting and didn't have time or money to go to town and buy more so my friends up the road who quilt said i could have some for the baby quilt im making. when i opened up the piece they gave me it was curved!!!! if i cut it in half and sew it together would that be ok to do? have any of you done it??? or would it cause a problem??? HELP!!! thanks in advance. i don't want to take off the boarder to make it work for me. OH and if it helps it is 100 percent cotton. i believe natural.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
You can sew two pieces together. Just cut them straight, line the edges up and zig zap them together. Don't overlap them as you don't want a "bump" in your quilt where there are 2 layers of batting.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
THANK YOU!!!!! i din't want to waste it and i don't think they meant to give me a bad piece. so just a regular zig zag stich would work great? thanks for the fast reply, i want to finish this baby quilt tonight to send it out tomorow!!!!
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
I actually ordered something called "Heat Press" fusible web for my batting. It is 1 1/2 inches wide and you iron it on your batting to join the pieces. I'm waiting to receive it so I can give it a try.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
Genny, please let us know how it works....would be interested in getting some for me and my daughter if it works okay
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
Dito Karen, I do it very often and it always helped.
@Genny
Whereas I would be a bit skeptical about that Heat Press fusible. How does it hold after it's been washed a couple of times? Especially in the places where there might be no quilting. Inform us about your experience please. Thanks in advance
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
I saw a lady test out the heat fuse - it blended better in the quilted piece where she overlapped her two pieces and rotary cut them in a scallop, butted them together and then fused them. Fusing them in a straight line resulted in a gap showing up in the quilted piece. You didn't see any gap when the pieces were scallop cut and then fused.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
I sew together pieces of batting all of the time to make my quilts. I use a zig zag stitch and just go slow. Never a problem. I have done it with very big quilts also. I hate to waste anything. Good luck with it.

I'll give this a try when I receive my Heat Press.

Maybe I should zigzag over it after using the heat press. At least the heat press would hold it in place so it'd be easier to sew together.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
I probably won't get this for about a week, I ordered thru Ebay, and I'll let everyone know what I think about it.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
Yes, I butt my pieces together then zig zag and quilt right over them and have never had any trouble. I have put as many as six pieces together to make a big quilt, once quilted you can not tell where it was joined. I don't like to throw anything away.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
thank you all for the ideas. unfortunatly for me i didn't get to the quilt i had to bring my 2 year old son to er. and they admitted him...too bad i don't have a portable sewing machine!!! still sitting in hospital but at least my hubby went and brought my laptop!!! croup with a double ear infection and strep throat. this sucks....
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
Hope your son feels better pretty soon. I know what that is, we have 3 children too (all over 31 now) but Boris, our son had croup too and lots of times along with one infection or other. Good luck!
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
thank you!!!! we are now home but now i have two sick kids!! :) but the baby is better, still haveing a hard time breathing, but my five year old has the cauphing and stuff too. but i get to disinfect everything today!!! fun stuff.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
I use the heat fuser tape and it works like a CHARM!
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
I have used both the zig zag method and the heat fuser tape. Both work great. The fuse is nice but pulls a bit when stretched on the long arm.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
The tape used is called Heat Press Batting Together and is available at almost all quilting stores and online sites...Connecting Threads has it.
I have been taking the Craftsy classes by Ann Peterson. She has two coarses "Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine" and "Beyond Basic Machine Quilting". She is such a good teacher so easy to understand and like our Jenny she likes to use things around the house rather than buy something. When joining pieces of batting together, she suggests to cut it in a large wave cut. Then either baste it or Heat Press Tape it together. She shows this in the split binding session for FMQ a large quilt in pieces.
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
I sew my pieces together all the time....no problem. I do make a lot of placemats, table runners and holiday banners. I especially use the pieces for these projects because they don't get the same wear as a quilt. However I do save my larger pieces for the quilts and because I tend to quilt very close together.....I have NEVER had a problem...when I sew mine together I use my multi-stitch zig zag stitch..... I only use warm and natural batting....
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
thank you all. i zigzagged it and it worked great!!!!! kids are all better and im just working on my quilt now!
Re: can you sew together two battings to make one big one?
use the fusible tape, it works like a charm! I tried sewing, but since i am a newbie it didn't work at all! the Fusible Tape zips it up quick and off you go. Won't pull apart either!
