can you sew together two battings to make one big one?

I saw a lady test out the heat fuse - it blended better in the quilted piece where she overlapped her two pieces and rotary cut them in a scallop, butted them together and then fused them. Fusing them in a straight line resulted in a gap showing up in the quilted piece. You didn't see any gap when the pieces were scallop cut and then fused.

I'll give this a try when I receive my Heat Press.
