Favorite Thread for Hand Quilting
After reading a previous thread regarding, well, thread, I have another question regarding thread (that's a lot of thread):
What thread do you use when hand quilting? I just ordered some polyester from Connecting Threads (thank you for the suggestion!) for my machine quilting project but I also have one I'm doing by hand. What do you recommend I get? I have Coats and Clark but you were all so against that and now I'm noticing why. I'm assuming their hand quilting thread is just as negative in your opinions?
Re: Favorite Thread for Hand Quilting
I have used Coats and Clarks 100% cotton hand quilting thread. I do fine with it as long as I don't cut too long a piece. I tried Gutterman hand quilting thread but it seemed to always break on me.
I don't use any other Coats and Clarks thread in quilting though, not on my machine.
Re: Favorite Thread for Hand Quilting
I use Coats and Clarks for pretty much everything. I have no problems with it at all. I have done FMQ with it as well. I have used some specialty threads for machine quilting, some good-some not so good.
Re: Favorite Thread for Hand Quilting
I would ust coats and Clark for hand quilting but never in my machine
Re: Favorite Thread for Hand Quilting
I love the Coats and Clarks Quilting Thread for doing handwork. Agree, don't cut your pieces too long because it does tend to twist on you.
Re: Favorite Thread for Hand Quilting
I wouldn't hesitate to use Coats & Clark quilting thread.
Re: Favorite Thread for Hand Quilting
I find it interesting all the negative I read for the all-purpose Coates and Clark but how different it seems to be in regards to their hand quilting thread.

I stress that I like the 100% cotton Hand-Quilting Coats and Clark. I do NOT like their polyester covered cotton hand quilting thread. It tends to fray in the needle.
Re: Favorite Thread for Hand Quilting
I use Gutterman Hand Quilting Thread for almost all my hand quilting projects, including my big turtle quilt that is entirely hand quilted.
TIP: My quilting instructor taught me to thread several needles onto the spool at once then I just take a needle and pull out the amount of thread I need and cut it off leaving all the other needles threaded onto the spool. I used to thread several and put them in the pincushion but then I would end up with the threads getting tangled together.

I thank you for this tip. It is priceless. I intend to share it with others who do hand stiching

It's because you are not running it through your machine on hand quilting. The thread is not bad its just bad for your machine so says my repairman. I use Gutterman for my machine
