Binding using multiple fabrics?
I just wondered if it's a no-no to make binding from several different fabrics (scrappy binding???)? I am almost ready to bind the 16-Patch quilt. I originally purchased extra backing material to make the binding but now I'm thinking a contrasting binding would be nice (as per the pattern). I have so much leftover fabric, but not enough of one colour. Do people ever make binding from several fabrics or would that look kind of weird and chaotic, distracting from the quilt? Thanks for opinions!
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I do it all the time.... i do prefer though stitching together on an angle, rather than up and down... gives a nice look... hummmmmmm, but looking at your quilt... your 16 patch blocks are so perfect, it might follow suit stitching them straight... this is a super quilt... love the choice of gold/yellow as your sashing...:)
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
Yes, I would use the multiple patterned pieces you have left. I would, however, make sure they are all the same size so the binding looks as if it was definitely planned that way. (Does that make sense?)

Sandy...so you mean the lengths of each colour in the binding should be equal (ie. 8 inches of red, then 8 inches of blue, etc.)?
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I love the idea of a multiple color binding! I had that thought for my granddaughter's quilt but it may be too busy, I'll have to think on it some more. I think you could cut the lengths either all uniform or random lengths as long as there are really no short ones where it looks choppy.

Exactly - can you tell I hadn't had enough coffee before I posted!
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
and i of course would make it random and "funky"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehehehehehe
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I love scrappy bindings I really like using the leftovers from my quilts. You quilt is really pretty you did a great job.
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I can't respond to your poll, because I do a little of each, depending on my mood, the quilt, and if I want a scrappy or more planned look. I tend to go toward scrappy, and don't make the pieces all one length. But I do agree with what Sandy said, since your quilt is very "organized" looking, a more organized approach to the binding would look better. I like the idea of using the colors in your quilt in same size pieces for the binding, that way you get the randomness of color, but the precision of size. It looks soooo good, I'm not sure if I could sew small squares carefully enough to make a quilt like that. I'm working on that aspect of my piecing.
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I like the look of multiple fabrics in a binding. What i don't like is sewing them all together. there is always at least one I sew the wrong way no matter how careful I am.
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I think your quilt lends itself to a scrappy binding. Not so if it had a busy pattern. I feel a "scrappy" look would add much interest . I've done it several times & get lots of compliments on choosing a scrappy binding. GO FOR IT !!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I used a scrappy binding with all different sized strips on a 1600 Jelly Roll quilt and it came out looking great, if I do say so myself, but I'd use uniform pieces for yours. I put them together using a 45 degree angle just like with regular binging and recommend it. I think it would add a really cute touch to an already adorable quilt!

3/4 done quilting...thought I was doing a rather large meander but it's still turning out pretty heavily quilted! I just can't train my mind to go even bigger! Will finish tomorrow...I'm starting to get stupid because I'm tired and my shoulders hurt. Can't wait to be done and then bind! More photos in my 'album'...
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I'm making my little great grandaughter a quilt I'm thinking of using the left overs for the binding. I actually like the way it looks.
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
I have one a friend made for me with a scrapped binding. I love it. I think you should do it that way.
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
Personally, I would NOT put a scrappy binding on your quilt. As said earlier, your quilt is very neat and "organized" (absolutely lovely and perfectly pieced by the way!) and my opinion would be to bind it with 1 solid colour.
Re: Binding using multiple fabrics?
Every time I finish binding a quilt I throw the leftovers in my binding drawer. I like making scrappy bindings. Doesn't matter what length they are. I just join them all together. I makes for a very unique binding and add lots of interest. Of course I usually only do this on scrappy quilts. Love your quilt and i think a binding made up of all your different colors would look fantastic!
