Default felt back on table cover??

I have a table cover I want to finish up. ( after I finish the last couple of swap blocks I'm almost done with.)

Once in the past I used fleece to back one and was able to quilt it without the bulk of batting. The fleece minimized the bumps from the seams so you could put a glass on it without it being tipsy. I don't think I have enough thin fleece to back this one, and I was wondering if felt would work.

The table topper is for a side table next to the couch so it needs to be smooth after quilting. It is a half hexi pattern and I plan to machine quilt 1/4 inch from the hexi seams.

    Any thoughts or advice?

Leigh, you pose an interesting question - one I've never really thought about before. I suppose you could use felt - however it would depend upon whether or not you ever had to launder the topper. I think all the table toppers I've 'purchased' have had batting in them but can understand why you wouldn't want to use it and why you wouldn't just want plain fabric.

Hopefully someone with experience in table toppers will chime in. I personally would give it a try. After all - it's not as if you are going to be throwing the topper in the laundry every week.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Thanks Sandy, I may just give it a go. Searching on line I've found lots where people used felt AS batting. That was mostly for wall hangings since it made the piece stiff. I'll layer and see if it smooths out the seams and decide from there.
