I just ruined the prettiest fabric
Happy Sunday morning to all
I've had a terrible morning I had a yard of Elinor Peace's dancing with fairies and was going to use it to make a quilt for my granddaughters birthday. I got up early this morning and started cutting my squares when I finished I noticed that most of my sqaures only had the feet of the fairies. I had only 25 usable fairy squares. I guess I should have fussy cut, I am trying very hard to chaulk it up to beginners error but I really want to make the quilt for my gd so this is what I came up with. I would like to make the non fairy squares 4 patches but kept messing up those as well. The fairy square wound up to be 5 inches after cutting and recutting boo hoo :)

I think your GD will love it all the same! It looks fine.

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
That's a bummer but I wouldn't say it's ruined! The colours are so pretty and the squares you've shown are beautiful! I think she would love it as well and it will be still very pretty in the end! Lesson learned for next time but not a total loss at all! :)

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
Your granddaughter will love it just the way it is. It's an easy mistake to make. I always feel i'm wasting if i fussy cut but there are times when it is a good choice.

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
thank you all. I knew I could come to you to make me feel better. I would like to use the 2 non fairy fabrics to make strip four patches instead of the solid squares, what size do i need to make each strip to get a 5 inch four patch square?

Evelyn, now you get to wear your Been There Done That t-shirt (we all have one).

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
The quilt squares look great to me. I think that she will love the quilt and will not notice what happened. If you did not say anything, I would not have noticed either. I have done this myself and I could kick myself. I can't answer your question about the 4 patch--my brain will not work this morning--I am sure someone here will have the answer. Good luck!!

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
Cut the strips three inches. (When you're not sure what size to cut just take the finished size of the squares,in this case 2.5" finished and add 1/2" for the seam allowances.)
By the way, it'll be fine! Don't point it out to the recipient. She will never realize that you cut the fabric wrong. The old saying, "I didn't make a mistake, I meant for it to be that way" will save you lots of frustration when your plans don't always work out the way you intended.

Fairy toes are still very cute.

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
Welcome to the club.....we've all done that or worse. It's darling....definitely not ruined. Your DGD will adore it because grandma made it just for her!!! Don't point out what you don't like and no one will even notice. Hugs, Barb

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
The fairy fabric is so pretty. If you wish to turn a negative into a positive let the quilt become a "seek & find". She can count the fairies , then count all the legs she can find , etc.

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
Just tell her that you tried to get the fairies in the squares but they kept flying off. She will love that

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
Truth, be told, when i love the fabric, i don't usually even think too hard about fussy cutting... sometimes i'll do a feature few blocks by sashing the fussy cut... with a solid, then just use the fabric up for the rest... the colors of the print are meant to work together however you use them, otherwise it would be a PANEL.. right???:)

Hate when that happens but glad to know I am not the only one to do things like that. It still looks fab : )

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
Thank you all, your comments, advice and encouragement have made me feel a lot better. I found more of the same fabric on-line for $4.99 a yard so I ordered it for my DGDs quilt. I am going to use the 25 squares I was able to save to make a QFKs or Project Linus quilt. I am anxiously waiting for my fabric so I could start the quilt for my DGD. :)

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
aww--I think the fairies you saved will be enough to evoke the images in the child's mind!! Good save...not at all ruined!

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
I love the idea that the fairies keep flying off! Even if you fussy cut all the squares to put one of those adorable fairies right in the middle, I think you should still have at least one flying off the quilt! I'm glad you were able to find more of the fabric to make the quilt just the way you want it. What a cute little quilt it will be! Show us all when you have the top put together, please!

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
I made a fairy quilt for my great niece (turning 2 in March) and I did fussy cut but wasted ALOT of fabric in the process. I would have just used the other squares (cut again) in a small border or the binding, and if you didn't have enough then I would have added another fabric or two until there was enough. It would have turned out darling so don't throw them away!! Your quilt turned out darling and I am sure your dgd was ecstatic over it. Who could not love fairies. I have them all over my home!! LOL Piece and blessings, Vicki

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
Why not cut the one's you don't want to use into skinny strips or smaller squares and use them in the border as pinwheels or, flying geese even small 9 patch would work. Make it look like you intended it to come out that way. It would almost become an "I Spy" when you look for the toes, elbows, knees, etc.

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
I got my replacement fairy project yesterday :) I hope to start "fussy" cutting it this weekend. I thank you all for the wonderful ideas. I think I will try to use the "non-usable" pieces in the border of both my grandaughters quilt and the one I am going to make for charity. I think this is not only going to turn a negative into a positive by finding a use for all the non-fairy pieces.
Thanks you guys are great!!!

Re: I just ruined the prettiest fabric
I love the squares you have pictured! I was thinking about sort of putting the two squares back together. The fairy head, a thin sashing, then the fairy feet
