How do I add cornerstones to sashing?
I am making my first ever quilt and would like to add cornerstones to the sashing. Is there an easy way to do this, perhaps a tutorial I would view? I am a visual learner so I love the tutorials.. but any help would be appreciated. I know it sounds like a stupid question and I'm sure I could do it on my own... but I rarely do it the easy way first. This time I'm asking in advance.
Thanks, founditatlast

It's not a stupid question....there are no stupid questions!!! But I can't answer you because I've never done it myself. I would thing do the same as in woodworking...measure twice and cut once.

Re: How do I add cornerstones to sashing?
Hello--not sure if this is how other people do it---but this is how I do it:
I first have to figure out how wide I want my sashing-because I know that will determine the size of my cornerstone. For example, if my sashing is 3 in wide--then I know that my cornerstone will be 3 in square.
I sew the side sashings on first. I measure from the bottom to the top and then sew it on.
I then measure the top of the quilt. I measure the top from sashing to sashing. From there I know that my next two sashing with the cornerstones in place will have to be that long. For example: say the quilt measures from side to side 12 inches long with 3 inch sqare cornerstones. I would cut a strip that is 6 inches long plus 1/2 inch more to account for the 1/4 inch seam allowances . I would then sew the cornerstones on each end of this strip.
Now you can sew these sashings with the cornerstones on the top and bottom of the quilt.
I hope this helps. There may be another way, this is the way that I do it and it works for me. Good luck!!

I haven't done them either, but if I did, I would do it the way Nena described it.

Thanks for the replys. I will give Nena's directions a try... Thanks, Nena! I'm at that point now to cut the sashing. Pics when done (if it turns out).

WEll here is a pic of my first quilt top... did the cornerstones on the sashing to the best of my ability. Still have to put a couple of boarders around it. Now my question is ... do boarders have to be all one piece of fabric or can I piece it (on the diagonal?) if my material isn't long enough? Thanks in advance for your help.Attachment 16110Attachment 16109
Re: How do I add cornerstones to sashing?
from the looks of this truly beautiful quilt.... (first, wow)... i'd say you can do what your heart tells you... i piece all the time when short on fabric... that is what quilting is about for me... using what i have.. your center medallions are wonderful..
your Machine Embroidery (applique it looks like) is fantastic... lot of work in here... thanks for sharing!!!!
Re: How do I add cornerstones to sashing?
Thanks GrammaBabs... I have more time than money so making the embroidery/applique medallions was ok with me. I had purchased the design months ago and had to wait for a break in my little embroidry biz to start the quilt. I always jump in with both feet when I start a new hobby/craft. I take my time and learn as much as I can the first time around.

All I can say is WOW! That is one beautiful quilt and awesome since it is your first!!!
Re: How do I add cornerstones to sashing?
Picture perfect! You did a beautiful job.
Re: How do I add cornerstones to sashing?
I'm impressed.. it is just gorgeous!! I too piece and use what I have. That is what makes it MINE...all MINE.
Re: How do I add cornerstones to sashing?
Thanks everyone who commented!
If I was going to keep it for myself I would definitly piece it... however, I will probably put it up for sale assuming it turns out fine. I really like it or I wouldn't have made it but I have two little dogs that like to jump on my bed and they would really mess up the white part.
So now that you know I will try to sell it, should I piece it or go buy more material? And where do you buy fabric wide enough for the back so it isn't pieced?
Thanks,
Diane

Diane, I'm super impressed with your first quilt! Your cornerstones came out fantastic, and your blocks are stunning! Here is a link to wide fabrics for backings. I've never bought from here--I usually piece my backings AND my borders, but I understand your desire to make it more "sellable". Hope you find something that works for the backing!
