    Default My Dilema

I posted this in another section of this forum and Doris was nice enough to suggest one of the iphone apps but it didnt work

I found a pattern that I love and want to make with my warm memories layer cakes. My dilemma is that the pattern calls for a 12 1/2 inch square surrounded by a diamond and triangle sashing. Is there anyway to resize this block around my 10 inch layer cake squares. I've searched the internet and haven't found anything that works. I need to modify those triangles and diamonds to my 10 inch square? I've been saving these layer cakes for a special pattern and now that I found it I can't use them. All help and/guidance is much appreciated .

Evelyn, can you send me the pattern cutting instructions for the sashing pieces? I'll see if I can work it out for you. That is in case Karen doesn't get it figured before me.

    Instructions
    Things You'll Need

    Ruler
    Graph paper

    1

Study your current quilt block to determine how many squares it uses. Most quilt blocks are made of a square broken into three, four or five blocks across and down.
    2

Draw a square onto a sheet of graph paper in your desired reduced quilt block size. Divide this square into an even number of smaller squares, depending on the number of internal squares in your particular quilt block pattern.
    3

Copy the design from your original quilt pattern onto the new square on the graph paper. Draw each individual internal square separately to make sure you get the pattern copied correctly.
    4

Cut the graph paper square apart to create templates for cutting out fabric patches to create your quilt block. If you use the templates directly on the fabric, remember to add 1/4 inch all around the template for a seam allowance.

    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Your diamonds just need to be an inch shorter to work with a 10" square. The triangles would be the same measurement. By cutting the diamonds an inch shorter ( there are 2 on each side) that takes away the extra 2 inches needed for a 12" center block.

By diamonds I mean the orange parts in the picture. Trapezoids or what ever those tilted rectangle things are called.

Sandy-where the heck do you learn all this??? You are amazing. It is a great reference to have for sure (especially for us mathmatically challenged). Thanks.

Just a thought, any time you modify a pattern be sure to sew it out with scrap fabric first before cutting your quilt fabric, just to be on the safe side that it will still work. Tehe, ask me how I know that...I'm the get excited and rush in type person, I have learned my lesson.

Thank you so much. Sandy I'll scan the cutting instructions at work tomorrow and Karen I called them diamonds because I didn't know what they were either. I do know their not trapezoids because while I was researching I found a picture of a trapezoid and it didn't look like that. Sandy I did find that article during my research so I must be beyond mathematically challenged because I couldn't figure out how to make it work for me. I will try the inch shorter on scrap fabric over the weekend.

Thanks for your help and putting a smile back on my face

I think the orange segments are "parallelograms". You can do make this work Evelyn!!

Haha, I was starting to type that in my answer, but I knew I wasn't going to spell it right and was too lazy to look it up so I put trapezoids.

But if you only resize the centre block from 12" to 10", I think the parrellograms and diamonds might look out of proportion...or did someone already mention this and I'm just repeating it LOL. You may want to draft a couple options out and see what looks best. Then again the original widths may work out just fine.
