Just a thought before I begin my new quilt.... Has anyone ever put satin or satin-like fabrics as a border on your quilts? It was just a crazy idea and was wondering if it would work with the shrinking of the cotton blocks or not? Any thoughts?

Sorry Donna, I have never used any satin like fabrics so I can't answer your question. I hope someone else will be able to help you out.

I've seen people use the satin-like blanket binding. Sandy has used it and said she liked it when I asked her about it. I've never seen anyone use it as a border though. Satin is normally dry clean only, I wouldn't want to mix that with cotton fabrics and sort of doubt it would hold up well in a quilt.

I had a funny call when I did draperies. It was from a policeman that wanted his "blanket" reproduced. It was something his grandmother made for both him and his brother. He brought me both to look at, his was in tatters and his brother's was pristine.;0]
They were made from washable satin and had a flannel blanket inside and were tied with yarn. I ultimately made him 6 like it for his kids and grands.

I've made children's blankets for a customer that were minkee with ruffled satin around the edge. I don't quite picture regular cotton with satin, though. If you try it post a pic. I'd be curious to see the end result.

I'm not sure I'm ready to chance it yet. Perhaps before I incorporate it into a quilt I can make a sample and wash it a few times and see how it holds up. When I do I'll let you know how it goes.
Karen is right. I used satin binding on a cotton baby quilt and it has gone through many washings and has held up GREAT. I don't know if I'd use any satin other than the binding (which I have to admit what I used was made specifically for binding). I have used various fabrics from men's neck ties and have laundered them without problems. Satin? I don't know but the ties are strange fabrics and have done well with cold water and the drier.
Be warned. I am BORED.
This could be dangerous.
When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
They are usually 90 degrees.

Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??
That's a good idea Sandy. Maybe I can "recycle" some of hubby's ties. Hehe I am actually thinking about a flower on my quilt made out of that material. Thanks
Take a look at the "flannel-backed satin". I have made PJ bottoms and trimmed flannel PJ tops with it. It is heavier than regular satin and has softer drape to it. It comes in several colors which remind me of sherbet flavors. It is usually in the apparel section.
I have also made a kit that had brocade in it. I did serge the edges of that before I incorporated it into the top.
