Cool My measurement accomplishment and delima of which way to press seams.....

I know the discussion has been gone over before, but....here are pics of the quilt I am making...I am sewing the strips onto the middle block and 2 of the 4 strips have a little square sewn to the end of it. I have pressed the seams to the dark...the red. HOwever...once turned over...the seams are not all going the same way. I plan to SITD this quilt so, is there a way that it'd look good to STID with the seams going opposite at times? OR should I just press the seams all the same way, no matter which color? I figure there are two reasons for the concern...1, dark colors don't shadow through lighter colors and 2..keep the thickness of the seamed area the same as opposed to some seams on one side and some on the other on the same length of fabric section.
So...what is the decision? toward dark color no matter what it ends up to be for SITD, or press all one way, no matter the color, but for STID...all seasm are on same side?

I am also very proiud of myself.. and just have to pat myself on the back. This is my first attempt at making the squares/seams/corners all match up perfectly...I did all the calculations and then when I did the cutting (of the squares and strips) I added scant 1/8 inch..so if the strip measured 12,1/2 (1/2 for seams allow), I'd cut it 12,1/2, plus a scant (or probably exactly) 1/8 inch and went just past the 12,1/2in line...Guess that'd be 12,5/8inch. But it worked. Everything sewed up perfectly square, equal and matching!

    It looks good!

I don't know about anyone else, but I never really paid attention to where the seam allowances were when I did SITD and it worked out fine for me. I would leave my seams the way they are pressed now.

Very nice---you did a great job. My stitch in the ditch is easier to do also if I pay attention while sewing all the seams. Funny how that works.

I think it would depend on if you were stitching in the actual ditch or a scant bit on one side or the other of the ditch. If inside the actual ditch I don't think it would matter one way or the other. I've never done the bit on one side or the other of the ditch so that may make a difference... I'm not sure on that one at all.

I press mine the same way you did. When you are doing the STID, slow down as you approach the change and you shouldn't have much problem. An alternative to STID, if you have decorative stitches on your machine you can go over the seam with it. I like the serpentine stitch. It is very forgiving if you are off a bit.

I am considering a deco stitch instead of just straight. I just did that on the placemats i made and it looks really nice. What I orginally was thinking was a not IN the ditch, but stitching down each side of the seam with a long straight stitch,,to resemble hand stitching. I have a deco stitch on my machine that is called "hand quilting stitch" and it does look like it, but it takes up so much thread and is so tight, one mistake and it'd be near impossible to take it out without making a mess of the fabric and it'd be so obvious if I left it. SO I tried something else and it worked really nicely.
