Has anyone made this quilt? I'm wondering how many jelly rolls I would need to make a full size quilt. I've watched Jennie's tutorial several times, but she doesn't tell how big a jelly roll will be. My son proposed to his girlfriend and I want to make this for a wedding present! Thanks for any help!

I have done one, it was so much fun! I used one jelly roll for a lap quilt. So I'm not sure for a full. I don't have the measurements because I'm not home and won't be for awhile so I hope someone else can give you some help.
I am in the process of finishing hand stitching the binding on mine. I used sashing, solid white jelly roll strips, in between each column of braids and a wider outer border and it is measuring 54x60. I did have enough of each jelly roll strip that I could have added another column of braids but I wanted to do a pieced binding and I was afraid there wouldn't be enough left to do that. This was a big help to me - and your quilt is so so beautiful!! I have been wanting to make one and now I know I do! (would you have enough left from the jelly roll to make the braids longer for a longer throw?)VQuote:

jumping in ..... your question of how many can not be answered as simply as 1 or 2 because when you are choosing your jelly roll you will also need to take into account how many strips are in the roll ..... some are as few as 20 and some as many as 46 or more ..... my suggestion to you is to grab one in a fun print you like or if you have some stash, cut strips and make a couple of braids as a trial run - that way you will know how many strips you need to complete the braids in the length you want them. This will also give you practise practise practise in making them perfect for yours son very special quilt :) just my nickle..... look forward to see what you come up :D

As a general guess, one 42 piece jelly roll usually makes a lap size quilt. I think to get a full size you should plan on at least 2 with some yardage for borders.

Jamie and dpa, Thank You and yes, I did have enough left that I could have made another whole column (or made each column longer). I knew I wanted to have a pieced binding and I was afraid I wouldn't have enough if I made the quilt larger. I used 1 jellyroll for the braids and several solid white jellyroll strips for the sashings and narrow inner border, yardage for the wider outer border (that's not in the pic). The jellyroll had 42 strips, if I remember correctly.
Suzi, Thank You too! I am so excited to get it done. I am just getting ready to turn the 3rd corner on the binding. I have been working on it laying in bed in the evening little by little, so it's been a bit slow going. I also unstitched one whole side earlier this week because it didn't look quite right to me, it's looking much better now. Hubs about had a fit when he saw me frog stitching!
When I get sleepy I just snuggle in it LOL

Jamie - congrats for your son! Do you have a fabric line picked out to use? You could always pick up a couple of extra fat quarters or yardage that you like in that line, cut strips and add it in to the braid. I'd love to see it when its done :)
Are you using the Creative Grids Trapazoid ruler for this? I just took a class using this ruler and loved it. I made a boarder for a baby quilt.
Wow, all of these are so pretty, i am dying to try one! I just made a jelly roll race quilt, and one 40 piece jelly roll made a lap size quilt. I've seen some jelly roll patterns that say use two to 4 jelly rolls for a large quilt. So I would say plan on at least two. You don't want to get halfway through it and run out and then not be able to find more to match. This will be a very special quilt for your son and his new wife, they'll never forget what you've done for them.
I'm so happy for all your responses and pictures! I love all the quilts and know I have made the right decision on the pattern. I'm still surfing for jelly rolls, though. I want to match the decor and not make it super girly (flowers). They have a fall color theme, so I should have plenty of options. I think I will go with 3 jelly rolls (40 each or the equivalent) and another jelly roll for the inner sashing and then a larger border of a matching print (same print for the backing probably). I'm just so excited and glad to have plenty of time as my son just started a new job today and will not have time off for a while. I went online this weekend and purchased a walking foot and extender table for my machine, so I'll be ready to quilt as soon as the tops ready - now to shop for fabric!
