Unhappy How do I figure out my Backing???

Okay, I've finished my quilt top. It is about 52" square. I have fabric for the backing, if I remember right I bought 4 1/2 yrds. I'm figuring I want 56" square but how do I figure where to cut my fabric? I planned on doing one seam in the backing. If I cut it in half, it would only be in the neighborhood of 52" long after squaring it. Okay, that's another question...how do I square up that much fabric? My living room is small and it is carpeted. It is the biggest room in the house. Help!! I don't know what to do next!!!

    Love to all,

If you cut it in half you'll have 2 pieces of 2.25 yards - which = 81 inches in length for each piece so you'll have plenty. Cut the selvage off of one side of each of the backing pieces and then sew that together -- your back will be plenty wide, too. You can cut off some of the excess back fabric with scissors - you don't have to square up the back now. It should be larger than your front piece and batting but it doesn't have to be squared up prior to quilting. Pin/spray your sandwich, quilt it, then square all of that up. You can square it up on your cutting table in sections. You would even have enough of your backing fabric to use for the binding.
