I want to try making a DP9 quilt and I don't want all the fabrics that come in the precuts because it looks too busy. How many fabric choices would be good to keep it simple, yet warm and homey? I haven't picked any as yet.
It will be for a family with 2 little girls.

Check out fabrics made by Kansas Troubles:they have such warm and inviting colors. I actually am making myself a quilt with Cattails and Clover charms packs. I love the colors and how they blend together without being too busy. I am putting brown Minkee on the back and cannot wait to wrap myself in it!

Since the D9P is made with a basic 9-patch I think the minimum numer of fabrics I would use would be 9-12. In most of my D9P quilts I buy a solid or print fabric and use it in the center of all the blocks to give the quilt more continuity. Sometimes I find a print fabric that blends well with my charm squares and use it in some of the blocks and then use it as the border. You might be surprised how well all those kprints would look when they are cut up and re-arranged. Just remember to have fun....Barb
Three fabric choices make a striking quilt...something like a red for center block, black for corner blocks and a white or cream print for remaining blocks. Any three contrasting colors are great and make a beautiful quilt. I like limiting the colors.

I totally don't know if this link will work...but I made my first d9p for a Christmas present and there were something like 7-9 colors...
I like the look of more rather than less, the less creates a much more strong geometric pattern, which I didn't care for as much..

I have done them with only 3 fabrics. If you want to spend some time, you can fussy cut the corner pieces. DD made a memory quilt this way, pictures in the corners, reds and black for the rest. was quite nice when done.
Thanks! You all have given me some good places to start and decide. I really like the Kansas Troubles line. I can also blend it with some other fabric that has small prints as well. I started this project back in October and every quilt I made turned out better for other people, so I decided to go with my first insticts and follow this homespun route.

I made one as a test quilt for my FMQ with just 4 fabrics (plus 2 for borders). It's in my album - tfrankum. You can see what it looks like with a few fabrics.

wow. And...where in Chesterfield do you live??? We may be neighbors...because I live in Chesterfield as well.
OK...so as always, I changed my mind about the DP9..HOWEVER....I fell in love with these small print primitive-type fabrics and am going to make a small tumbler (3" finished) quilt. I was cleaning out and organizing my small fabric stash and found several fat quarters in this style, so that's what I am doing. I'm pretty excited about it and will post what I've done when completed. Of course, I think I need about 700 of these suckers to cut!!! OMG.
Also, searching for the Kansas Troubles fabric ( which the LQS has ) I found a Primitive Quilts and Projects magazine. Yay! Funny how things just go where you wouldn't think would go. And I like bright quilts. Go figure.
I made one with red print for the center blocks, a black print and 6 different creams. It turned out gorgeous. Used a red stripe for inside border and the black print for outside. I am not crazy about too busy quilts, so this was perfect.
