I would use a thin batting.

I use warm and natural batting and sometimes I put a layer of Insul-brite in also.
I agree with Shirley! I have not made placemats yet, but when I do, I will put a layer of Insul-brite in them. This will help reflect the heat back onto the plate, keeping the hot food hot, hopefully, and keeping the heat from damaging the table. Works as well with cold food, that might sweat thru!
I use a lightweight batting and if they're to be used for hot items I also use insulbrite.
in my last placemates I used old towels. I'm a scrapper and recycler. If they're to be used with hot plates etc. I use also insulbrite .
Mamaquilt - Excellent recycling idea for those old ratty towels we all have in our linen closets! The Insul-Bright is a good idea. If I didn't have Insul-Bright I'd probably use two or three layers of cotton batting. I always use the thin cotton batting. I don't think it would be enough to use only one layer to protect the table.
I love the idea of using old towels, I have some ones that I'm desperate to get rid off but can't throw away
I aways use insul bright when I am making table mats and pot holders.Always remember to put the shiny side UP in table mats and DOWN in a pot holder.
What is Insul bright and where do you get it?
