Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
Hello,
Has anyone made a double wedding ring quilt using a jelly roll? I finally found my color scheme that I want and it happened to come in a jelly roll. Now, I'm not sure if I can do the wedding ring pattern with it. Any suggestions? If you have pix of your quilt using a jelly roll, that would be great to see. Thanks everyone.
Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
I don't have an answer, but can't wait to see what people have to say. I love jelly rolls. :-)
Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
I've not tried it, but in looking at the double wedding ring quilt I have that my grandmother made the pieces seem to be about jelly roll size. There would be a lot of cutting to make everything the right shape, but I think a jelly roll would work as your fabric. I don't know of any shortcut for this quilt though.
Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
somewhere on the web there is a video with a woman cutting the arc wedges from a jelly roll. I thought i had bookmarked it but no. i would think you would have very little waste using a jelly roll.
HA! found it!

Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
I think it's definitely possible to use a jelly roll for the" Double Wedding Ring." Eleanor Burns has a tutorial in her "Egg Money" video series showing how to do it with applique. I'm also reading that there are paper-piecing patterns for it as well. I guess you paper-piece the ring and then sew those rings onto the background fabric. I've never tried one but I imagine the hardest part is the curved seams. There are tutorials on curved piecing that would certainly help make the process easier. I hsven't checked but I wouldn't be surprised if there are acrylic templates for those curved squares to make cutting out the rings really easy.
Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
Yup, Rebecca, there are templates and paper piecing templates for the Wedding Ring pattern.. Just do a "search" and you'll have your choice of it all. I still think the applique way would be my method of choice.....I mean, we are going to "quilt" the whole thing anyhow..so it wouldn't matter is there were SEAMs all around.. (I'm using my sewing machine to applique)

Here's the link to Eleanor Burns video: http://quiltinaday.com/theater/egg/egg7.html This actually looks pretty easy to do! She uses strips.
Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
Thanks, Rebecca for including E. Burns site to watch the double wedding ring tutorial. I've been told by so many quilters not to attempt this quilt. After watching Ms. Burns video, I would consider attempting one. In fact, it's on my bucket list!
Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
Ooooh Carol - do not let anyone tell you to not attempt to try it. I made quite a few table runners when I first started of the double wedding ring pattern and no, it wasn't a huge quilt, but I don't remember pulling my hair out. You go with it and have fun. Then you can show them! Can't wait to see it.
Hugs,

One of my favorite blocks.....but never attempted one. Definitely on the bucket list!
Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
I think jelly rolls may work depending on the size of your templates or paper piecing patterns.
If you're looking for templates, I recommend the ones from Shar Jorgenson at Quilting from the Heartland. I included a link to her site.
You can catch some videos of her using the templates on Quilter's TV. I included the link too.
Click on "Heartland/Shar" at the top right of the screen under "Video channels". When the first video starts rolling, click on "browse videos" under the viewing screen. Scroll through the titles until you hit the videos for doudle wedding ring. There's the traditional DWR (#8), Diamond Wedding Ring (#7) Glorified 9 Patch (#11) and Starflower (#27). The last 3 are based on the DWR. All can be made from the same templates from Shar. I have them but have yet to use them to make anyone of these four variations. Using all the variations would make a great sampler wallhanging quilt I think!!!

My first wedding ring quilt was using one print for the entire arch rather than several little pieces. I'll try one block and see how it goes. Thanks again for all the responses. Very much appreciated.

The Eleanor Burns' version uses 3 inch strips, so a jellyroll would be too narrow. Eleanor's method looks really simple and fun. You might want to take a look!

I just watched part of the video and it seems she trims quite abit away after sewing on the stabilizer to the arc. I think a 2 1/2" strip might work if you're careful.
Re: Double Wedding Ring with jelly roll
I agree, Denis! I don't understand why she used such a large strip for the size template she used. I'm sure you could use 2 1/2" strips.
