borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Last night I finished putting my blocks together for he purple quilt I am working on. So I decided to lay my blocks out and see what I have. Before adding any borders it is 21" x 36". So I have two options I can border the heck out of it or I can get another jelly roll and make some more blocks to make it bigger. I am wanting a lap quilt out of this. What do you suggest?

Then I move on the issue of what kind of border I want and binding. I think for the backing I am going to go with a white/purple combo so its not so dark lol. I was thinking about a black smaller border and then a purple larger border.
Let me hear your ideas ladies im going looking at fabric today! Notice I didnt say i was going to buy but i am going to look! haha!
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
OMG I love it! Did you use a particular jelly roll or just your stash? For borders, were you looking to lighten it up or keep it in the darker way? If lighter, maybe put a small border of white (hard to tell from the photo if there is white or lighter pink/purple), then a purple or black. That would make it pop I think. What does anyone else think? That would make a gorgeous quilt for Quilts for Kids. Our chapter told us they were low on boys/teens quilts, so I am trying to go in that direction for them. I have 2 boys so I have lots of extra guy type fabrics. My next QFK that I want to make is using the spider web design they came out with. Are you making this for a gift?
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Love it, your choice of fabrics is perfect so eye appealing! I would use a narrow black border to frame your blocks and then use the purple for your outer border. I think that purple border would be striking and the darker tone would be richer looking against those fabrics. I would use the purple for the binding to. Can't wait to see it done what a beauty!
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Oh I kind of like that idea of adding the white border too! Yes there is white in the this. I used a jelly roll from hobby lobby for this one. This is actually going to be in a silent auction for our relay for life. I saw that yesterday for the quilts for kids that they are low on boys/teens stuff. I plan on going through my stuff tomorrow to see if I can come up with something to put together a quilt or two. I also requested a kit yesterday and Im looking into starting a chapter here. I will have to go look at their spider web design I dont think I saw that. Thanks for your suggestions!
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
I love it!
Tha fabric is so pretty, and the block turned out very very nice!
You did great on this top, I'm sure it will turn out gorgeous after borders and quilting it!
I have a jellyroll waiting to be made in this same pattern, so now I know how big it's going to be.
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
I love the colors and I love the suggestions already made. You may want to add a few more squares for a bit bigger size before your boarders, but not to many. I would figure out what the finished size is to be and how wide your borders are before adding more squares.
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Very nice, love the fabric. You did a great job putting it together. Can't wait to see it borders & all. Thanks for sharing.
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
That is beautiful! I would definitely get a black border in there and maybe white or purple. I think the black would make the fabric designs pop. Let us know what you find today. This is also a pattern I have admired, was it difficult to piece?

That's exactly what I was going to say, but then saw that cathy had already said it. So "ditto" Cathy's suggestion. :)
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
If your quilt only measures 21 x 36 I would go get another jelly roll before adding borders. Right now it will probably only cover someone's lap and leave their knees sticking out. What you've done so far looks great. The colors worked up very pretty.
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Hello, Britt! Beautiful quilt top! I'd add another jelly roll, a 2 inch black border, 2 inch white border, and then finish it in purple. I absolutely love the purple. Saw it at Hobby Lobby the other day, but they only had 1 and I knew I would want more, so I didn't get it. I'll keep looking. What part of Tennessee are you in? I'm near Maryville.
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Oh Britt, this is just beautiful! I love the pattern and the colors! I think I would go with the purple and black also but I'm sure what ever you pick it will be fine! I'm so anxious to see it finished!
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Hey Britt, your top quilt top is gorgeous. I might have missed the purpose of the quilt. It would be stunning baby girl quilt and if so, just add a border or two. If the purpose is a lap quilt or larger, then go with another jelly roll and then decide if you need a border. I'd go purple and black. White would also pop. You did a great job and can't go wrong. I can't wait to see the finished result:)
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
You've already gotten so much good advice but I'll add my two cents anyway! If you want a nice lap quilt size, I think you should add more blocks, then a thin black border and a wider purple border, bound in purple. Whatever you do, this already rocks. Great job!

Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
I've heard on quilts with many colors like this...light and dark...the binding is best to match one of the darker colors cause if you you a lighter color...the binding is what stands out and doesn't blend in with the quilt as well and just looks like a bunch of color inside a white (or lighter color) square. I love that maroon color you have and I would choose that one. Especially since from the pic, it looks like more black in the quilt than any other color and the maroon binding would keep it all together without standing out. Looks beautiful tho!
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
If you want the border to stand out, use white or black (I'd suggest black. Think white would be really bright) If you want it to blend and just stop your eye from all the movement, I'd use the pink that is reading as a solid. For the first border I'd probably use a small size 1-1/2" and then use one of the busier prints for the large outer border and bind in the same color. I agree with other that making more blocks would be the route to go. I'm not crazy about quilts with several different borders. To me it detracts from the design unless the border has a pattern that is part of the quilt pattern. Let us see what it looks like when you're finished. It's beautiful right now!
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Thanks for all the suggestions!
i think I have decided to get another jelly roll to make it just a little bit larger and more of a lap quilt and not a baby quilt. I have not found my border & backing fabric yet. Plan on going this weekend to find it. Did not really see anything that caught my eye this past weekend.
Re: borders and binding (for purple quilt)
Wow, I knew when you first showed us a block that this was going to be very eye-catching! I love it! I'd have to play with it, but am thinking maybe 3 borders, inside maybe a white (thin border) but would have to play with it to be sure, then maybe a border of actual quilt blocks cut into border strips, and then a black stop border. (I like to try and sneak a little bit of the acutal quilt fabric into the border when possible). I'd really have to play with the inside border, not sure if bright white is it though. It is very nice, be sure to post pics!!
