    Default What is this pattern?

When I started quilting, about 7 months ago, I was sharing some pictures of quilts I made with my Mom when she remembered an old quilt they had tucked away in a closet. This quilt belonged to my grandmother, and when she passed away in the 1970's they found it UNDER the mattress on her bed. They didn't recall seeing it before.

My Mom dug it out recently, washed it, and put it on a bed in their spare bedroom. I think it's wonderful! They have no idea how old it might be but did say it was very thin in spots.

Any idea what pattern this is or if it's possible to guess the age based on the pattern?

    Thanks for your feedback!

Looks like a variation of grandmas flower garden, made with hexagons.

Yes that is what I would have said. Beautiful quilt.

Thank you! I googled that pattern name and came up with pictures of very similar quilts. I also found this pattern was very popular in the 1920's and 1930's which is probably about right because my Dad was born in 1932 (this was in his mother's house).

My parent's live in a different state than I so I haven't been able to see this in person yet. I think it looks beautiful.

Thanks for your help with this. As I new quilter I have a lot to learn about the classic patterns!

Wow Denise. That is beautiful. This is truly a great find and sure to be a family heirloom for many generations to come.

I highly recommend that your Mom have it appraised. We had a quilt appaiser come to a guild meeting and I ended up having an old family quilt done. In case of a loss, insurance companies don't pay what quilts are worth without an appraisal. I even heard they only pay the "used blanket" value which is about $25. That's a crime.

Thanks for the additional comments and tip to have it appraised. That's a great idea and I'll pass it along. I was so excited that my Mom didn't think to just discard it at the time they were clearing out my grandmother's house. After seeing it now that would have been such a crime!
