Resizing Stack and Whack blocks - using charm packs
If I wanted to use charm packs (5" squares cut diagonally) instead of turnovers (6" squares cut diagonally) what size would you make the rectangle that goes with the triangles on Jenny's tutorial? With the 6" turnovers the rectangles are 3 x 8. Would you cut the rectangle 2.5 x 7? I have a lot of charm packs and thought I could make some stack and whack lap quilts from the charm packs instead of the turnovers. Thank you for your advice!
Re: Resizing Stack and Whack blocks - using charm packs
2.5 x7 sounds like it would be right. I know in the "normal" size you have a little extra on the rectangle so I think you are safe with the 2.5 x 7.

uuuuh...this sounds too much like a math problem. Quietly closing the thread and retreating...

ROFLMAO! I'm no mathematician OR speller, either, for that matter! But I bet that you could make the rectangle bigger and square it all up - if you're better with the rotary cutter than I am, that is!
Re: Resizing Stack and Whack blocks - using charm packs
I would just cut long rectangles and trim to fit.....then use for the next one...trim...etc.
Re: Resizing Stack and Whack blocks - using charm packs
You could also lay out the triangles in the position they will hold in the block and then measure the open spaces.
Re: Resizing Stack and Whack blocks - using charm packs
Sounds like music to my ears,......."I have a lot of charm packs"..........
Overhere a charmpack is hard to find but if so it is about $$$$$$ 40 up to 45 $$$$$$ per charmpack.....
So if I could get them, I would never buy them. So guess what I will take home from my trip to the USA?
But to get back to your question, I can't help you but I like that you asked and got answerd, so I might try that for my wallhanging, I bought 2 charmpacks at MSCQ and this would look just right I think!
So thanks for asking, and have fun making those quilts, and......don't forget to post pictures!!!!

Wish I could be of some help but I'm mathematically challenged! LOL
Re: Resizing Stack and Whack blocks - using charm packs
Hi Klasien, I don't mean to digress from the question being asked in this thread but your comment about charm packs costing $40-$45 each has blown me away. When you visit the states you should take home as many charm packs as you can possibly carry!
Re: Resizing Stack and Whack blocks - using charm packs
I don't know how much MSQC charges for out-of-country shipping but loading up on them and having them shipped all at once would probably still be a lot cheaper than 40 bucks!!!

DCM - When you figure it out let us know the measurements for the other squares in the block. I love that type of pinwheel but it would be nice to make them a bit smaller than turnover size.
I just took a look at that block again. The only piece you need the measurement for is the rectangle. Looks like all the triangles are exactly the same size. I kind of forgot how it was constructed. From what I see on-line they call that block "kite pinwheel."
Re: Resizing Stack and Whack blocks - using charm packs
When I first started quilting, I cut a square and then cut it on the diagonal and sewed two triangles together for a square and couldn't figure out why it didn't measure right. Then I finally realized I hadn't added the extra 1/2" for the diagonal cut! DOH.... Now what I do is use a sheet of paper. I cut out my pattern pieces, and I actually sew them together to see if they are cut at the right measurements to get the finished size I am looking for. So maybe you could use one of your charm pack pieces and cut a paper piece and practice with paper to see what size rectangle you need... that is what I would be doing.

This is a great idea for someone like me that NEEDS it to be very visual instead of numbers. I just can't translate numbers to a 'real life' pattern, I HAVE to actually see it to make it work.
(remember those tangrams in school? "Here is an unfolded bizzarre shape- what will it look like if you cut it out and fold it back up?" I could NEVER visualize those things! Same with patterns for me)
That's why I make muslins for dresses too, I am definitely mathmatically challenged.
