Re: Cheap throws for batting
i've used fleece as a backing for quilts, no batting inside. I suppose you could use it as batting as well. it would make a warm quilt
I know some use flannel sheets for batting to make light weight quilts.
Re: Cheap throws for batting
Sounds like a great idea, go for it.
Re: Cheap throws for batting
You know what they say "the Mother of invention"!!.... Yet another "creative opportunity"... it all works in hand-crafting... i've been known to use felt.... it was dirt cheap... most of my quilting is for charity, gifting to any and everyone,, or sound at giveaway pricing at our craft fair... it's all about fun for me... have at it girl!!!
Re: Cheap throws for batting
Good idea :D
I've done that with IKEA throws too! the white one is the one I am using at the moment(I cut the fringing off and used it at Xmas to tie around a gift I had wrapped in brown paper) on quilt for a single bed, is working out just fine and dandy!
Cheap and cheerful as they say!
Re: Cheap throws for batting
As My Grandmother would say.. if it's washable you can use it. I've found old blankets, pieced blankets and felting type material in alot of OLD quilts.. so go for it.. I believe I would prewash before using it---just to be safe.
Re: Cheap throws for batting
I have used similar in craft projects. It is a little stretchy so can be bard to quilt through. I got the best results using spray basting to hold it in place. You can join together as well
Re: Cheap throws for batting
well I used special fleece for quilting, bought at the quilting shop,
I also used old towels,
used old blankets, folded up 2 or 3 times,
as well as I used flanell blankets,
and now I have some fleece jackets awaiting to be used.
So if you don't try it out you'll never know.
Re: Cheap throws for batting
We have an IKEA here and I've never even thought of trying that. I pay almost $60 for a king size roll of polyester batting. Let us all know how it works. I may have to investigate on my next trip to Ikea.
Re: Cheap throws for batting
I've used bed blankets before and they have worked fine. I think my only problem is....I had the top, the blanket/batting and a back fabric and it was just a little to thick and heavy, but the kids loved them in the winter in Texas!
Re: Cheap throws for batting
That's great advice about the batting spray Sunny and thank you all ladies for your encouragement, and the idea of using it as batting and backing all in one!. I just saw that price and thought wow, and they do plain white cotton fabric really cheap too and thought this could be a way of making quilts to give to everyone and anyone without having to budget for some much expense.
I'm doing a really nice quilt for my bed and one for my dad that I don't really want to be too warm so I'll use proper batting for those but for snugly lap quilts to give as gifts I'm hoping this will be perfect.
Re: Cheap throws for batting
I always use fleece as a batting, and just bought two of those blue ones yesterday, euro 1,29 each........very good price.
It shows a little at the white parts, but I just put another layer of cotton in between, I'll use this to try in my scrappy quilt, so it is still a very cheap project. My goal was to make a quilt out of thing I had, so this is what I will use!
Love Ikea.....hahaha
Re: Cheap throws for batting
My SIL is from Canada and her mom quilts and she uses older thin blankets all the time for the batting. I am going to IKEA now because I had never thought to look there...
Re: Cheap throws for batting
Thank you all so much! Batting is expensive and I had no idea that one could use other things such as old towels, fleece, etc.

Re: Cheap throws for batting
In Australia I get them from KMart for $2.50. They are a little on the thin side but I have used it double thick on a floor blanket for a baby and it was the perfect thickness then.
