    Default Pieced Back

I'm trying to figure out the best way to piece together a backing, how do you do it? I just ironed my fabric in half and cut it on that crease. I know I have more than several inches of overhang so I'm not worried about strict accuracy.
When piecing two pieces together do you pin first? Matching up middles, etc. Or do you just put two corners together and sew to to the end?
If you need only, say, 15 inches more width on one edge do you still piece two large pieces together so you have one seam down the middle or do you just add that little strip on one side?
I heard somewhere that a single seam down the middle makes your backing weaker. Not sure if that's true or an old wives tale.

I'm sorry but I can't answer your question. I'm a newbie myself. I'm hoping that someone with more experience will answer your question. I've also heard that a single seam down the middle will weaken your backing.

I've often pieced down the middle and never had a problem with my backs. How I do them varies by the fabric I am using. If the fabric is busy enough and I only need it a little wider, I've added a strip to one side. You can't even notice where the seam is! Most times, I make a decorative back. It's a great way to use up fabrics from the front and adds a little interest to the back. Sometimes I add blocks, other times I add strips. I have pieced the whole back with large squares, or chunks of fabric. I do tend to like things more symmetrical, so I will often add narrow borders between a row of blocks and use that as a separator for 2 larger pieces of fabric. I have taken a full width of fabric and just added borders to make it the right length/width. I sketch out what I'm thinking of doing. I lay out my fabrics and play around with them until I like the combination.

I usually add a piece to each side of a full-width piece the length of the backing. I also like Katie's addition of extra blocks or pieces on the backing to add interest.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

I like and have done the same as Katie & Sandy.. depends upon my material and type of quilt I am making. If I have an extra block or two left over I try to add them to the back.. sometimes just appliqued on or sewn into the backing as a whole piece.

Just have fun and enjoy the process...There is NO right or wrong way.. just the creative way!!

Same here. My backs are usually out of a print so the seams aren't real obvious. Once it's quilted it's even less obvious. I piece the back in whatever way uses the least amount of fabric. I figure that no one is paying much attention to the back of the quilt except maybe in quilt shows.
