I hate my iron, so I'll pass on a suggestion. Hopefully others will have some good input for you!
Ha! I wouldn't wish my luck with irons on ANYBODY! But I do have one suggestion - don't get it at Walmart! I've bought 4 there in the past year...
I have a Sunbeam 3040 iron that I have had for a long time. I loved it when it was newer. I need to get a new one because this one has been knocked on the floor a few times by rambunctious dogs and I have even accidentally knocked it off the ironing board so needless to say, the steam feature doesn't steam, and the retractable cord doesn't retract. But it still gets hot so I just keep a spray bottle of water handy and spray whatever I need to iron and it works.
If I can find one I will probably get another Sunbeam.
I love the iron that is used in the tutorials and on a lot of the tv shows but I can think of a lot better things to do with $200 then buy an iron... LOL Like material!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ooooh
I'll be watching for suggestions too. I'm due for a new one.
I have an ancient Black & Decker that I love....has 6 foot cord & NO auto shut-off (love that)
but I've abused it over the years & dropped it so many times that now it's pretty dinged up. It kinda snags the fabric.
other than that, it still works great. Just can't find another one like it. Time to look around at others. Wow- they sure
have gotten expensive tho! I'm with Donna....LOTS of other things to do with $200
I use a Rowenta Professional and love it!
I'm like jingleme - I have a Black and Decker that I love - must be just like hers!! I also have a couple of the little $10 irons and keep one by each machine when I'm working and in a hurry. Otherwise I use the big iron as the only exercise I often get is when I jump up and down to the ironing board between seams.
I have an Rowenta Effective Model DX1700 that I picked up at Ross for $24.99 - had it for just over 7 months and love it so far. Use it mostly without steam. Do use distilled water when we steam (DH is Army Vet, does his own shirts).
Had a different Rowenta in CA, can't remember what model that we used mostly steam with, lasted about four years. DD and SIL lived with us...they did not put distilled water in it. :( as that would require them to walk down stairs. bad children, bad children lol
i love my iron i just bought....it does have the auto shut off but for me that was really importany since i have a 2 year old son so if he touches it, it doesn't burn him....but if you give it a couple seconds to warm up it great...also a good iron you can get is from the dollar store for 10 dollars and it wont shut off on you
Love my Reliable....can set to stay on forever or let it auto shut off.......no drips, no leaks, no problems. Uses distilled water only. Has a filter on the water to save the iron. Has 2 heating systems so water is hot and sole plate is hot, too. Great steam! Long cord that is positioned for easy use, never in the way. It is a little heavy, though......I consider it exercise. Check them out.....pricey, but well worth it! I use to burn through a Rowenta every year before I found this one.
Hate my iron. The fastest auto-shut off I've ever had. You can't turn it back on unless you unplug then plug it back in. POS. Grr.
I have a Oliso that I bought on Amazon. It was a very reasonable price for such a nice iron especially after I compared it to some at Target. I also have a small travel iron with a really sharp point that I like to use when I have smaller blocks to iron.
I don't like an iron that requires special water.
I had a Rowenta and just threw it away, the "auto-off" feature got stuck, and it wouldn't turn back on. Went back to a cheap Sunbeam from K-Mart, and when it gets messed up, I'll buy another $20 iron to replace it.
My irons don't stand a chance of surviving in my house which is why I buy the cheap Walmart ones.
I have a rowenta---don't know the model though. I got it at Joann's on sale. Love it!!!!! I won't let my family use it because I don't want them to ruin it.
I got a Rowenta for Christmas this past year. I LOVE IT! It has the auto shut off, I thought I would not like that at all but I do. When I pick it up and move it it comes right back on! It has an auto clean setting. So if you have bad water (like we do) you can clean the iron and it wont get clogged up and cause leaking. It also has the cord reel in the bottom, push the button and the cord goes right up in the bottom. Bad news is it was marked $99 but at Christmas it was $40 so I don't know if you can get that price now! Before that I had a Black & Decker and a Sunbeam. Both of them leaked. My guess was the bad water we have! Good luck on your search!
I have a Rowenta, not cheap but well worth the money! Have had it 2 years and it's as good today as it was when I bought it.
Hate my Rowenta Professional. Hoping I can save up for an Oliso one day.
My Sunbeam worked fine until I accidentally ironed over some tulle. Anyone know how to get melted tulle off the bottom of an iron? I've liked it and don't really want to buy a new one.
Sounds like a game of chance with whichever iron we buy. I had a Rowenta that I LOVED, bought another and it's terrible - leaks, turns off as fast as it can and doesn't come on again quickly. Bought a heavy Black and Decker thinking the weight would help for pressing - it's a fast-off act, too. Have been using a cheap old Black and Decker that doesn't have the energy saver feature, but I could use something better. I appreciate all your advice - you all mentioned a couple of brands that were new to me that I'll look into. As for the tulle - did you try pressing over some waxed paper and then trying to wipe the sole plate while it's still hot with a paper towel (being careful not to burn your fingers)? There are sole plate cleaners out there, too.
If anyone else has an iron recommendations, I'm open to all. I'm loving having go-to people when I have questions! Thanks!
I have used a Rowenta in the past and it was the smoothest iron I have ever used. When I moved to Iceland, I could not find one here, so I bought a $40 Tefal, no auto shut-off and it is great! Sometimes, when I am quilting, it is on for literally hours and no problems with overheating or anything. Plus-it heats up fast after I plug it in.
Funny thing though. One night I was home alone and I plugged in my iron and then went into the kitchen for something. I heard a loud noise, like something had fallen on the floor in my sewing room. I went back in and surprise-my iron was unplugged and the plug was actually about 12" from the outlet....
I have a Shark from WalMart, the one with the red tank. It is auto shut off, but comes right back on if you jiggle it. We have well water, so I buy gallons of spring water and that saves alot of stress and brown spots on my fabric.
As for the tulle, try the hot iron cleaner. I got it at JoAnn's and I think WalMart has it too and it works great.
I have a Hamilton Beach from WalMart with the auto shutoff. It was $25 and I've had it over a year or so. Auto shut off that comes on with a quick turning it horizontal. I am very happy with it. When I checked out what the quilt shop used and talked to them about it, they said they use cheapies. Tried the more expensive but they didn't do any better. I got a heavy duty one and now wonder if I should have gottem smaller. I'm like some of the others.......would rather use the $$ towards a new machine. LOL
I have a Rowenta (leaks) and a Shark. The Rowenta was great until it started leaking so now I use it with no steam. Just bought a new Oliso at Road to California and I love it. Heats up fast, does have auto shut off but it reheats quickly, it's a nice weight for pressing, and it is so cool when it lifts and falls. It was expensive, but did get a nice show discount.
I've had quite a few Rowenta irons over the years. I love them, but they tend to leak. They usually last a few years and then just die. I keep buying them when I find them on sale because while they work, they're great.
I just had to buy a new iron (see previous post about tulle) and I got a Black & Decker Quick N Easy Iron at Walmart for $13.88. It is awesome. With one sweep it gets wrinkles out of fabric. It's just what I've always wanted in an iron.

I have a Rowenta that is made in Germany. The ones made in Germany don't leak like the ones made in China. I actually have one of each, but don't use the older one because it leaks. Rowenta has an iron that doesn't have an automatic shut off feature. I don't have that one as I have small kids in the house, but I got to use one and it's amazing. This is the one I used: http://www.hancockfabrics.com/Rowent...VVviewprod.htm
I went to our local Restore Store (Habitat for Humanity) and got a vintage GE for $2. No auto shut off, steams great and gets super hot.
I have a Black & Decker and it's OK. Nothing to write home about. The one I had before that would come apart with only the very back of the handle holding the thing together!! My one complaint is that the soleplate is so small. Not as big as the base of the iron. So, if you think you're fusing something you might actually be an inch or so short!
As for cleaning the tulle off the iron, you can iron over a dryer sheet. Makes a mess on the ironing board, so put wax paper or aluminum foil on the board. It took melted carpet off my Rowenta travel iron. Don't ask!

Thanks to whoever had the idea with the travel iron. Made myself an iron board last week according to Jenny's tutorial, but needed a small iron to just press the seams while sewing. That way I won't have to get up and go to the next room.
I'll be using my travel iron now next to the sewing machine.
And it really works that tiny iron. Tried it out this afternoon. Thanks again for the idea
I found an old style black and silver sunbeam and I love it. I have a Rowenta, and they have all the new fancy irons at my LQS, but none of them really get hot enough for me. This heavy old black one gets HOT, and makes everything look so much crisper, especially with steam. (I never did understand why a few years ago suddenly all the clothing was 100% cotton and none of the irons would get hot enough!!?).
