I just learned a lesson the hard way this week... I am making a quilt with triangles - lots and lots of triangles. I did not starch before I cut them all out - no biggie and no problem.
I wanted to see if starching them made a difference when sewing, so I starched a few sets of the triangles (16 triangles for each BIG triangle). Well, some of the fabric has a slightly different stretch factor than the others (all from the same Northcott line). So, some of my triangles shrunk when I starched them, and some did not. Well, this could cause problems when piecing the top together! Luckily, I had some extras to work with and I can save the 'shrunk' ones for a pillow...
The lesson I learned is that if I'm going to starch, than do it to the strips before I cut the triangles...

If I am working with small pieces. Ala the farmgirl vintage 6 inch blocks it helps my precision a ton if I really starch the piece of fabric before I ever cut the pieces. I make the fabric good and stiff and have much less shifting and wonkiness in the block. Some of those blocks are 6.5 inches and have 30 something pieces in them. If you get just a little off things go south in a hurry. So I consider heavy starch my best friend

I, too, only use starch if I am doing a quilt with bias edges. I use Niagra (lol almost typed Viagra) spray and starch the fabric before I cut it. I really like how stiff it makes the fabric.

Just this Thursday, Kimberly of The Fat Quarter Shop had this blog post that talked about starching. Here's a video that was included in the post. It got me to thinking about it, so I came to the forum to see if it had been brought up. I always use Best Press, but went to Walmart this afternoon and purchased spray starch to try. I'm still undecided!

Wow, that's a lot of starching! I'd have to make something to hang all the fabric on after starching! Do any of you forum members do it this way too????
