Re: When do you Starch HST
I always spray before I cut the squares.
Re: When do you Starch HST
I never bother with starch. I just take care.
Re: When do you Starch HST
If I'm going to starch I do it before I start cutting. Whether or not I starch will depend on how much 'give' I feel in the fabric and also how small the HSTs are going to be. I'm more likely to starch if I'll be dealing with smaller HSTs than with larger as I feel like I can 'control' the larger pieces more easily. However, for one HST quilt I made with Kaffe Fassett fabric I did spray before doing any cutting AND before squaring up the blocks to sew them together. I just felt like that fabric had a lot of give and I was having problems dealing with the biases. At the end of the day I think it comes down to personal preference and what feels right to you for each fabric...
Re: When do you Starch HST
I'm glad this question was asked. I just got through cutting some triangles without starching, but the fabric is very stiff. Feels kind of like a batik, but wasn't labeled as such. But I think I will starch them before trying to piece them just to be on the safe side.
Liz, that Kaffe Fassett fabric is pretty floppy isn't it? Nice, but not much body.
Re: When do you Starch HST
I just realized I used "but" 4 times in that post. Is that a sign of latent contrariness? Or just the paradox of life? Hmmm.

Yes, I was a little bit disappointed in the KF fabric for the price I paid. But it sure was purty and the quilt recipient loved it so that's what counts. :-)
Re: When do you Starch HST
A little contrariness is a good thing. Keeps life interesting. :icon_razz:
Re: When do you Starch HST
I rarely spray starch my HSTs. I just press with the iron.
Re: When do you Starch HST
Thanks everyone for your comments. This really does help.
Re: When do you Starch HST
I don't starch my HST's, especially since I do them either 2 or 4 (8?? sheesh - how many do I make at once??) at a time from squares. I do, however, square them up before assembling them into the quilt top.
Re: When do you Starch HST
I really don't see how starching them will solve any problems. Just more work. Much easier to just handle them gently. That bias cut isn't going to stretch unless you are pulling on it.
