Wound bobbin as top thread?
I'm working on a practice sample of a small whole cloth quilt - my first! I have heard that you are supposed to use the same thread in the bobbin as on the top, so I wound a bunch of bobbins in the colors I'm going to use, bright hues of red, orange, yellow, blue and green. Then I found out this thread is too thick to work in the bobbin and the top! I just could not get the tension right until I put in a thinner bobbin thread.
So, my question is, instead of wasting all this nice thread that's wound on the bobbins, can I just use the bobbins as if they are spools on the top?
Re: Wound bobbin as top thread?
I have done so with no problems.

Absolutely. Have used up many orphan bobbins that way so I could rewind them with the color I needed.

I have as well and may I say your thread art is also very lovely. Have fun!
Re: Wound bobbin as top thread?
Thank you, ladies. I have never done it (hadn't even thought of it before) and wondered if it would unwind from the bobbin too easily compared to a spool of thread. I will have much less wasted thread in the future!
Re: Wound bobbin as top thread?
Your upper tension regulates how it unwinds from the spool.

Of course! I learn something new from this forum every day.
Thanks, everyone, for helping me out.

Done all the time for twin needle sewing. You can do it on a serger, too - for the needle threads. There is a gizmo that you can attach to a spool holder. Think it holds 5 bobbins.
