Adding borders long after quilt is used
I finally made up my mind and ripped the binding off a too-narrow quilt. Since I do QAYG it is no problem to add another border.
The original quilt has been washed a couple of times. How much extra should I add to new border to adjust for shrinkage?
I will make the borders x" longer, sandwich, quilt, and wash them. I intend to baste scrap fabric over the raw edges for washing.
Cotton, and cotton batting. How much would you add?
Thanks

I think 3 or 4 inches would do.

I would pre-wash your addition fabrics and backig and put them in a warm dryer to preshrink. I would also preshrink the batting by hand washing in warm water and then drying flat. That way the new more closely matches the existing quilt and the shrinkage won't cause ripples and waffling the next time the quilt is washed. Looking forward to hearing how your project turns out!
