    Default on the straight grain

I have lots of small/medium scraps of fabric leftovers.
Without having the selvedge edge, is there a way to tell which way a scrap piece was cut?...whether on the lengthways or crosswise grain?
    Thank you.

Most times I can see the grain. If you can't, pull a thread near the edge.

I think the length (with the selvage) generally has a little bit more stretch than the width. But if the pieces were very small, you might not be able to feel the difference.

Or is it the other way around?

It is the other way round: the cross grain has a little stretch and the lengthwise (selvage) has no stretch.

Starch and iron them and don't worry about it. That's what I would do. I think the straight of grain is more important when making clothes. Which I learned the hard way is very important.

I believe grain does matter in quilts. If you have ever stretched the diagonal of a triangle, you would agree! It might not matter in simple patterns, but the more seams and the more intricate blocks, the more the little things matter.

The length and width of your fabric are both actually straight grain; HOWEVER, the lengthwise grain is normally referred to as the straight grain and it has less give than the widthwise.
