    Default Batting argument....

Has anyone used the Dream Cotton batting from Massdrop?

I purchased some and it is not cooperating.

I sandwiched my I Spy quilt with it the other day and it persisted in wrinkling on the back. No matter what I did. I have sandwiched before successfully with Warm and Natural and with Hobbs. I thought it was the flannel.

So I went and got cotton. Tackled it again today. Even with the cotton, it persists in wrinkling on the back. I have used clamps, tape...used 505 basting spray...

It still looks "lumpy" on the back and I tried to iron and starch it. Wrinkled all to high heaven.

Is it the batting or me? If it is me, I think I will give up quilting. I don't live close to a quilt store and Wally World has only polyester batting here.

Frustrated beyond words. I think I'm going to cry.

Just a 'far out there' thought - put it in the dryer on a low setting for awhile to see if that relaxes the batting enough to stop the wrinkling. I know that is recommended when you have batting with heavy creases.

I've used Dream Poly, but not their cotton. The Poly was amazing, so I came to respect the company. Please let us know if the dryer trick works. I may have to adjust my opinion of the company.

If you'd like a good tutorual, go to YouTube and search on "Sharon basting." Sharon Schamber has an easy method of batting without wrinkles. It may help you.

I too bought some Quilter's Dream but I haven't used it yet, so I will follow your story with interest. Previously I had used Hobbs and Warm and Natural. With the Warm and Natural I was very worried about the strong creases from the packaging, so I ironed the batting using a lot of steam. I didn't know about the dryer trick. It worked fairly well and the baby quilt was fine. I have been drawn to the Quilter's Dream brand because it is made in the USA from USA cotton. Makes me nervous to think the stuff I have purchased might be difficult to work with. Please tell us the solution you come up with!

I use Dream Cotton all the time & have not had this problem. I will say that I've bought other batting (Hobbs wool) from Mass Drop & had problems with the creases. I think it has to do with how Mass Drop packages & ships. It just seemed to me that they compressed it more than what you get when buying at a regular store, so the creases are really set.. Maybe that's the problem. I still have a couple of batts I bought from mass drop, so I think I'll try the dryer trick. Before, I just spread them out flat & let them sit for several days...

I bought and used Quilter's Dream cotton batting. It came off the roll from my LQS so smooth as can be. I have also been buying Hobbs 80/20, king sized, in a bag, with coupons from Michael's. OFTEN, the middle of the roll is stretched and lumpy from the tight fold required to be bagged. Sometimes it does not press or smooth out at the last one or two feet of the roll. Bums me out.

I think it may be me. I have tried once more, putting the batting down first, spray basting it, and then ironing it with starch yet again.

The dryer trick may have helped with the wrinkles of the batting.

I may not be explaining myself very well.

I can smooth out the material and with the spray starch and ironing trick (and the dryer trick which I didn't know) I finally got the wrinkles out. But I swear, no matter what I do, I have "ripples" in the fabric. Not a true wrinkle but I don't know what it is going to do when I start FMQ. It is like the batting is draping a certain way and the fabric is draping along with it and creating the "ripples". I really can't capture what I am talking about with my cell phone and my good camera needs repair.

It's been one of those summers where strange things go wrong. Guess this is just another.

The next quilt I make over the size of a wallhanging will be sent to a LAQ. Don't have time to send this one, baby has been born. (P.S. this quilt is 54x72, so it is not a crib size, but not twin either)

    Thanks for any further ideas.

Connie, my basted quilt sandwich always have what looks like ripples - definitely NOT wrinkles, and definitely NOT tucks or folds - when I'm moving them around. As long as you've done your very best, and used enough spray baste (and it doesn't take THAT much), I suspect you have done it all correctly!

Are you planning to quilt simply with straight lines or stitch in the ditch? Or are you doing fancier free motion?

Dream Cotton is a very delicate batt. It has no scrim so you need to be careful how you handle it. A firm grip will cause "cups" in the batting. It's like when you pull on a bias strip and cant get it to go back into shape. You need to be careful how you handle it from the get go.
