Flannel quilt question
I am tempted to buy some of the flannel layer cakes that are daily deals but I'm not sure what to do with them. I am a fairly new to quilting. Can the flannel be used as the block and regular cotton used for the sashing/borders or do I need to use all flannel in the quilt?

Re: Flannel quilt question
I love the DD today! I'm seriously thinking about getting it. I'm pretty new too and not sure what I would do with it. I'll be interested in hearing everyone's answers too.

Re: Flannel quilt question
I bought a flannel layer cake the last time one was the daily deal. I plan to make a rag quilt out of it, either with flannel as batting, too, or some very thin batting.
I don't think flannel lends itself well to a lot of small pieces, but certainly you could do 4-squares or some type of strips. A combination of 5x10" blocks, and 5" blocks would be nice, whether it is a rag quilt or not.
(I'm no expert.....just sayin.....)

Like Snip Snip, I like flannel layer cakes for making rag quilts. This is one I made for my Mom last Christmas: http://forum.missouriquiltco.com/mem...quilt-mom.html

Re: Flannel quilt question
I did Jenny's double slice quilt with a flannel layer cake. Not all of the squares were true 10" but since flannel is streachy the quilt came out just fine. I used a thin batting and a pieced flannel backing. It is the favorite curl- up with to watch TV in my house.

Re: Flannel quilt question
I like that amartin24, but I have no idea how to do a rag quilt. I'm pretty new to quilting. I love flannel and MSQ disappearing pinwheels - could I do something like that with flannel? Would a 3 Dudes quilt work with flannel? Do all the blocks and sashing and borders need to be flannel or can you mix flannel and regular quilter's cotton? I hope that makes sense.

Guess what? Jenny did a tutorial about how to make a rag quilt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0UQgeol-Zk

Re: Flannel quilt question
I made my whole quilt from flannel. I also used cotton batting which made a heavier, warmer quilt. I think if you mix cottons and flannels, you just have to be careful to prewash the flannel as it will shrink up much more than the cottons. I used this tutorial and made two rag quilts so far: Bloom: Raw-edge layer cake quilt tutorial
I like rag quilts because they are very easy, super fast, and very snuggly. The more they are washed the cozier they become.

Re: Flannel quilt question
Thanks so much for all the suggestions - now I need to rethink what I'm going to do with it. I love how easy the rag quilt looks and I really liked that tutorial, amartin24! I like the way she quilted it as she went. That just may be my next project.
Thanks for the link to Jenny's rag quilt, FabStripper. I never considered minky for a quilt. So much to learn.
Either way, I'm going to order the DD! Thanks for your help - y'all are a friendly bunch.
