Question: How do you make 1000+ women's eyes glaze over?

    Answer:
For the math impaired, Pythagoreus did the hard part for us. A 30 60 90 triangle is a right triangle with one side one length, the other side twice that length and the hypotenuse (the longest side and opposite the right angle) being the square root of 3 times the short side.

I would draw this on paper and then paper piece it. That way you don't have to worry about accurate cuts!

    1. Buy the book "One Block Wonder" for a full explanation of what to do.

    2. Save money by just buying a 60 degree ruler, the kind with a point at the top, not a small flat area. Your seam allowances basically just work out because you're just cutting off 1/4" from each side so you still have equilateral triangles, just smaller.

So for the quilt type pictured, Here's what to do (there will be a lot of waste).
-Get a black jelly roll and a white jelly roll
-Sew each black strip to a white strip. You'll have 42 strips, black on the right, white on the left, 4 inches wide.
-Square up the bottom of each strip.
-Using your 60 degree ruler, line up the top point right on the black/white seam. Fit the ruler to the width of the bottom of your strip. Trim away the sides.
-Square up the bottom of the strip and repeat until all your black/white strips are cut.

You now have a whole pile of equilateral triangles, black on the right, white on the left. Sew these together in threes.

You now have a whole pile of half hexagons made of alternating black and white triangles. Lay these to make your full hexagons. Sew these rows together.

Voila! Your quilt top is done.
I'm not a math genius ,so I am so glad you explained this in english.

I think I answered this thread yesterday and told you to paper piece. I have run into a similar problem with a hexagon pattern. All the weird angles foul up my math too (I took my angles, blocks to my engineering dept and they enjoyed helping me). What I found to be true on a 6 inch overall hexagon block, the measurement is from one point (skip the next point) and measure straight across to the point on the same line (why I don't know, this is the standard and it makes no sense to me, so what I will tell you below is how to make one with a 6 inch edge). What I Have found to be true also is that you can add 1/4 seam allowance just on the 6 inch hexagon block and it comes out to more than 6 1/2 inches. I do not know why. But after studying this pattern you show, there are 6 equal triangles within that hexagon. If you are wanting one common edge to be six inches with adding 1/4 seam allowance that is easy. You would have 6 equal triangles in the center all cut to 6 3/4 inches (A triangle has three points. You can add seam allowance for 3 sides but you still have the tip of the center of the triangle to account for so add another 1/4 of an inch to get this final dimension). This is how I would do the block you speak of. Sew your two colors together in a strip set. Using your 60 degree template line up the center line on the seam allowance of the strip set and cut your triangles 6 3/4 inches in size. Sew your 6 triangles together and the finshed edge should be close to 6 1/8. If it is not trim it down to the correct size. I recommend investing in a hexagon ruler for this.

Watchout when I get super focused. I had no interruptions with loved ones, and I can sympathize because this person really wants an answer and hasn't gotten one. I may have burned out a few brain cells, but with a little bit of caffeine they will light again! Thanks for the compliment!
