If I used a layer cake instead of a jelly roll, how many layer cakes would I need?
Thank you

Terri....this is what I found! It should be one for one....
Jelly Rolls - 2 1/2" pre-cut strips, cut the width of the fabric (WOF), from selvage to selvage. Jelly Rolls are sold in sets of 40 strips from a coordinating fabric line; total yardage yield is approximately 2 3/4+ yards
Layer Cakes - 10" x 10" pre-cut squares, usually in packages of 40 fabrics from a coordinating line of fabrics; total yardage yield is approximately 2 3/4+ yards

I was thinking they were pretty even in yardage. But, I wish jelly rolls had 42 strips to match a layer cake's 42 squares.
I don't see a problem unless your pattern calls for a piece longer than 10 inches. But be careful because you might wind up wasting fabric and running short.
What pattern are you planning on using?
