Default cutting jelly rolls for borders.

First time quilter, how do you fold fabric to cut 2 1/2" for borders do you put selvedges together or cut ends together or does it not matter?

I cut fabric strips the WOF. I sew the ends together with diagonal seams. I usually have to piece only on the long sides of the quilt, since my baby quilts are ~39" wide. The length varies from 42 to 50".
