How big of a quilt are you going to make? How many blocks total? Don't forget the sashing/border to finish along the top and side.

With my templates, I know how many pieces I can get out of each strip I cut. I figure out how many of each piece I need. Then how many strips of that width, add that together for each color. (I round the pieces/strip up to a whole strip for ease of the math.)

I always add an extra bit in case there is an error or shrinkage when I prewash.

The firs step is to decide how big you want your quilt though.
