I'm may send a queen quilt top to M* to be quilted but didn't see any instructions for how much larger the backing needs to be, 4", 6" or 8". Would love some feedback from any forum members who have had their quilts done at M*. Thanks, May in Jersey

I will be interested in the answer too May.
I have a question for you.....how much bigger did you make your top?
I can see where it would be easy to make a border larger but what if you don't have
a border? How do you make the top with extra?
Only way I know how to make a borderless top larger is to add extra blocks to the top/bottom and/or sides. It depends how much larger you want the top to be. Say the pattern has 6 1/2" blocks and quilt size is 60" X 60", that would be 10 rows of 10 blocks across and down, 60 blocks. If you want your quilt to be 60 x 72, you would add 2 extra rows to the bottom (20 more blocks).
I am pretty sure they required 4 inches all the way around. I guess you would call that 8 inches bigger. It's been 3 years since I had my quilt done.
I don't know about M* but most of the people I've used request 4" larger. I know others here have sent to them and will jump in with the answer for you.
I would definitely go larger than 4". That only leaves 2" on each side. I had one quilt that I did myself that my backing wasn't perfectly square and only had 4" extra on the sides, I had 1/8" left to trim off on one side on the last corner after it was quilted. Even worse would be to bet to the end and have it 1" too short because you can't really deal that until you make the final unrolling of top and backing. Better to be safe than sorry.
I always error on the side of way too much extra.
Thanks, My backing is 104 x 110 so I'm going to leave at least 6" (3" on each side) but most likely 8". As Jean mentioned sometimes the backing isn't perfectly square.
I had 3 quilts done at the M* just before Christmas but I just had them charge the batting to my quilting bill. For me it seemed cheaper to have them provide the batting than to pay to have it mailed because the batting is fairly bulky.
4" all around. So 8" longer and 8" wider tecnically
I've sent several quilts to MSQ*. I think they require 4" overlap on all sides, but I usually leave 6-8" on all sides. I'd rather be safe than sorry and I know that MSQ* returns the excess. When I receive the excess back, it goes into my stash or I use the leftovers for coordinating pillows or pillowcases.
Hi I work in the quilting department of MSQC and we like to have your backing 8 inches wider and 8 inches longer than your quilt top. So if your top is 80 " by 80 " your backing needs to be at least 88" x 88". Thanks for asking.
Ok, got the backing part....I guess I want to know if the top needs have fabric added to it?
Thanks Karen that's what I've
been confused about
May your answer was fine. I didn't state my question right at first. Now I know about the top AND the backing :)
