Am I missing something in making the 2 sets of strips and sewing them 1/4 on each side, then cutting 45 angles, how can they open? They would still be sewen together right?

Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark.
I have watched the tutorial many times, I see she opens them. When I tried sample, they did not look anything like it....Will try again..Maybe just brain dead tonight

You are lining the 45 degree line up with the edge of the fabric. You need to be lining it up on the seam line.

I was thinking the same thing as Kaaren. Don't look at the edge of the fabric, but go for the stitch line. I just did this quilt and the first block I did I did edge to edge. Wow, not what it was suppose to look like. Then I noticed that she was cutting at the stitch line. Yep, that works.
There are 3 different Summer in the Park tutorials as well as the Tube Tutorial. (1) Summer in the Park, (2) Summer in the Park using Honey Buns, & (3) Summer in the Park Revamped. It might be helpful to watch all 4 of those. You can watch them as many times as you need to in order to familiarize yourself with the technique. I made my S in the P with 3 strips (which I cut from FQs), using a scant 1/4"seam, & the width ended up 6.5".IMO, this quilt pattern is not for a beginning quilter because of all the seams to match up. I found it much easier to press all seams open. There is less bulk when matching points. Try making a sample block out of scrap fabric. Good luck with your project.
I agree with Karen and Vicky - it works!
NYC, those are beautiful, I have seems for years, but only quilting for 12. For some reason I just was not getting it to click..had been sewing on a different quilt, piecing all day, got bored...guess my brain could not switch gears. Thank you...always so helpful.
