My DIL gave us a beautiful handquilted quilt and I love it ......however it is too small for our beds.....how can I add on to it as it already quilted?

I would not add anything to it. I would use it as a lap quilt

Once it's quilted-especially hand quilted-I wouldn't try adding anything. I'm don't think you'd be able to add without it showing. Use it as a lap quilt or decoration. How wonderful to have a hand quilted gift!!
Several years ago I made a king size quilt for my daughter using her measurements. Her measurements were wrong, and I was advised that it really couldn't be added to without ruining it. It was suggested to get a bed-skirt or to try and place the quilt on the bed so the "short" side couldn't be seen. Good luck.
Place it on the bed diagonally as a decorative accent piece, or hang it for display. I wouldn't add to it.
I would recommend not trying to add onto a hand quilted quilt. I would display it on a chair or the foot of your bed.
I see a lot of beds in decor mags with a foot blanket across the bottom and not intended to be pulled up. It is just decoration. I'd use it that way or draped across the arm and back of a couch or chair.

How about a quilt you did yourself by machine for yourself? Cut off the binding and add like doing QAYG?
I love the foot blanket idea. I made a bed runner just to warm my feet . I agree with the above posts: Don't add on to it but find a place in your home to use it. My mom had a table covered with a small quilt and a glass top.
You could put a coverlet on your bed with the quilt on top of it.
